Foot Chase Ends In Police Apprehension Of Alleged Auto Thief
About 3 am on Tuesday, October 23, Newtown police were dispatched to the area near the intersection of South Main Street (Route 25) and Bears Hill Road in Botsford to search for a traveling motor vehicle that had been reported stolen from Greenwich earlier that night, according to police spokesman Lieutenant Aaron Bahamonde.
The blue Toyota Highlander SUV had been pursued by Bridgeport police and was last seen traveling northward on Route 25, according to Newtown police.
While checking the Botsford area, Newtown police saw the Toyota traveling northward on South Main Street in the vicinity of Pecks Lane, and they then began to follow it, the lieutenant said.
The Toyota then turned right onto eastbound Wasserman Way.
With their emergency lights and sirens on, police pursued the fast-moving Toyota until reaching the area near 100 Wasserman Way, just west of Exit 11 of Interstate 84. The Toyota drove off the road’s right shoulder, struck some guardrailing, and came to a stop, Lt Bahamonde said.
The man driving the vehicle, whom police later identified as Cameron David King, 18, of Bridgeport, exited the SUV and started running away. After a brief foot chase, police caught King and took him into custody.
Police then arrested King on charges of third-degree larceny, engaging police in pursuit, reckless endangerment, traveling too fast for conditions, reckless driving, making a restricted turn, failure to maintain the travel lane, and interfering with police.
Police held King on $50,000 bail for a October 23 court arraignment on the charges.
