Nighthawk Boys’ Swim Team Races Against Tough Competition In Class M State Championships

The Newtown High School boys’ swim team competed in the Class M State Championships at Wesleyan University in Middletown on March 11. The Nighthawks placed ninth among 18 teams with 237 points and Pomperaug of Southbury came in first with 891.

Connor Kwarcinski came in third in the 50 yard freestyle race in a time of 21.40 and Hayden Bobowick was 15th in 23.59. Kwarcinski recorded a fourth-place finish in the 100 free clocking in at 48.49. James Guerrieri was 22nd in the 100 with a time of 52.77. In the 200 yard freestyle race Guerrieri came in 20th in a time of 1:57.33 and Finn Clancy was 23rd in 1:59.98.

Gabe Petertonjes placed fifth in the 200 yard individual medley race in a time of 2:03.05. Duncan Kolb was 23rd in the 200 IM in 2:24.11. Petertonjes also earned tenth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.16.

Newtown’s 200 free relay team of Guerrieri, Petertonjes, Bobowick, and Kwarcinski placed fourth in 1:30.53. The 400 relay contingent of Petertonjes, Guerrieri, Bobowick, and Kwarcinski came in seventh in 3:22.58.

In the 500 free, Johnny Barzetti was 20th in 5:32.47, Brady Wennerholm 22nd making his final touch in 5:32.89, and Kris Luci-Bernard came in 23rd in 5:33.18.

Oliver Clancy came in 23rd in the 100 backstroke race with a time of 1:01.56.

In the 100 breaststroke event Finn Clancy was 18th in 1:07.48 and Duncan Kolb 21st in 1:09.67.
