Struck Stone Wall
Newtown Police report Charles Pryor, 65, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2019 Ford Econoline E450, was traveling westbound in a driveway on Arrowhead Lane at 5:42 pm February 20. The vehicle struck a stone wall, displacing a rock on the wall.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.
iWatch Found
On February 20, an Apple iWatch was found in the area of Whitewood Road. Anyone with information regarding the owner is requested to contact the Newtown Police Department.
Hit Deer
Newtown Police report Larry Giddings, 56, of New Milford, operating a 2023 Hyundai Elantra, was traveling westbound on Berkshire Road in the area of Nighthawk Lane at 6:17 pm February 23. A deer crossed from the westbound travel lane into the eastbound travel lane and struck the front end of Giddings’ vehicle, causing disabling damage.
Giddings was not injured. The car was towed.
No enforcement action was taken.
Larceny Charges
Newtown Police report that at 7:28 pm February 28, officers responded to a report of a larceny at Newtown Youth Academy, 4 Primrose Street. The complainant said they left their wallet behind on an exercise machine and when it was returned, money was removed from the wallet.
Newtown Youth Academy provided footage of an individual later identified as Giovani Vazquez, 18, of Newtown, take the wallet from the machine, go into the bathroom with the wallet in his possession, and then locate the owner moments later after removing money from it.
Vazquez was arrested and charged with sixth-degree larceny. He was given a court date of March 13 in Danbury Superior court and released on bond.
Accord Strikes Century
Newtown Police report Mimi Barfield, 24, of Danbury, operating a 2016 Honda Accord, was traveling westbound on Oakview Road in the area of Watkins Drive at 7:48 am February 27. Ryan Koellmer, 21, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2004 Buick Century, was traveling eastbound on Oakview Road. Barfield attempted to turn left onto Watkins Drive while Koellmer was negotiating a curve in the roadway. The front passenger side of Barfield’s vehicle struck the front driver side of Koellmer’s.
No injuries were reported. Koellmer’s vehicle was towed.
Barfield was issued a misdemeanor summons for failure to grant right of way while making a left turn and operating under suspension.
DUI Charge
On February 28, Newtown Police arrested Juan Cardenas-Sagbay, 35, of Danbury, on the charges of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to drive right. The arrest stems from a traffic stop and further investigation conducted at the scene.
Cardenas-Sagbay was released on a written promise to appear with a court date of March 13 in Danbury Superior Court.
Slid On Wet Pavement
Newtown Police report Daniel Macancela, 21, of Danbury, operating a 2015 Toyota Corolla, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way at 11:46 am March 2. Macancela said he was trying to drive his vehicle fast because another vehicle was in close proximity behind him. As Macancela approached the area of Oakview Road, he lost control of the vehicle, sliding off the roadway on the pavement that was wet from rain, and striking a guardrail along the eastbound shoulder.
No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.
Macancela was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.
Reported Hate Crime
Newtown Police report that the department is investigating a hate crime that occurred at a residence on March 4. Officers were dispatched to the house that was under construction after the homeowner noticed that unknown persons had made derogatory remarks and symbols on the plywood floor using silicone. The incident occurred sometime within the past week, it is believed.
