Stites, Maddox Win Individual Titles As Wrestling Team Places Second In State Open

Newtown High School’s wrestling team had two individual champions among five place winners, and a pair of grapplers who reached milestone win totals at the State Open, held at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, February 23 and 24.

The Nighthawks scored 147.5 points, the most for a runner-up squad in Open history, according to NHS coaches. Xavier of Middletown, with ten place winners, won the competition with 243.5 points. There were 83 teams represented.

Fisher Stites was first in the 165 pound weight division and is a two-time champion. Jake Maddox won the title at 150 pounds, the freshman taking home the title in his first opportunity. Freshman Antonio Arguello also reached the finals and took second in the 144 competition. Marc Maurath, a three-time State Open place winner, earned second at 157, and Jon DaSilva, a two-time Open place winner, was third in the heavyweight division.

During the tournament, Stites (a senior) reached 150 varsity wins and DaSilva (a junior) reached 100 varsity wins.

The five wrestlers that placed at the Open qualify to compete at the 58th Annual New England Interscholastic Championships in Providence, R.I., March 1 and 2.

Newtown last won the State Open in 2015 and was runner-up in 2017. This year’s top ten teams included, third through tenth: East Hartford, Ridgefield, Danbury, Fairfield Warde, Simsbury, New Milford, Norwich Free Academy, and East Lyme/Norwich Tech.
