Boys’ Swimmers Win 11 Events To Easily Overcome Green Wave
Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming team visited New Milford on February 6 and earned first place in 11 of 12 events, also posting nine runner-up individual and relay race efforts in a 98-63 victory. The Nighthawks sealed the team triumph with three races to go and exhibitioned those events.
Elias Kolb, Finn Clancy, Gabe Petertonjes, and Duncan Kolb combined to win the 200 yard medley relay race in a time of 1:55.76. James Guerrieri, Connor Kwarcinski, Brady Wennerholm, and Kris Luci-Bernard took second in 1:57.15.
Guerrieri and Oliver Clancy went one-two in the 200 freestyle race with times of 2:05.32 and 2:12.83. Luci-Bernard won the 200 individual medley in 2:23.10 and Johnny Barzetti placed second in 2:24.54. Hayden Bobowick had Newtown’s best 50 free time, finishing second in 25.44.
Newtown diver Trenton Story was first with a score of 135.75.
Out of the diving break, it was another one-two Nighthawk outcome with Petertonjes and Barzetti leading the way in the 100 butterfly with times of 58.07 and 1:05.71. Kwarcinski was first in the 100 free, clocking in at 51.65. Oliver Clancy won the 500, making his final touch in 5:45.67 and Wennerholm was second in the 500 in 5:55.29.
The 200 free relay contingent of Warren Ache, Barzetti, Connor Kelly, and Kwarcinski took the top spot in 1:41.85.
Guerrieri was first in the 100 backstroke race with a time of 1:06.64, and Elias Kolb was second in 1:07.38. Kwarcinski and Finn Clancy posted a one-two in the 100 breaststroke, recording a 1:08.82 and 1:12.08.
Newtown had the top two groups in the 400 free relay event. Luci-Bernard, Bobowick, Ache, and Guerrieri was first in 3:51.48; Oliver Clancy, Kelly, Wennerholm, and Barzetti earned runner-up in 4:07.88.
Other Nighthawks who competed in the meet and helped the Nighthawks earn points were Sam Irving, Jason Wasilnak, Jeremiah Stone, Lukas Durrwacher, Jack Pettit, Kyle Albrecht, and Andrew Faircloth.
The Nighthawks will host Masuk of Monroe on Friday, February 9 at 4 pm and entertain Oxford Tuesday, February 13 at 5:30.
