Boys Swim Past Conference Foes From Barlow-Bethel Squad
Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming team defeated the visiting Joel Barlow of Redding-Bethel co-op 77-65 on January 17. Newtown sealed the team win after the 100 yard freestyle event and exhibitioned the final five races.
The 200 medley relay of James Guerrieri, Connor Kwarcinski, Gabe Petertonjes, and Kris Luci-Bernard was first in 1:54.80 and the team of Oliver Clancy, Duncan Kolb, Brady Wennerholm, and Warren Ache was second in 2:01.44.
Johnny Barzetti and Finn Clancy finished one-two in the 200 freestyle race with times of 2:10.04 and 2:11.46. Kwarcinski won the 200 individual medley race in a time of 2:10.56 and Jeremiah Stone was second in 2:32.72. Petertonjes won the 50 in 24.49 and Ache was second in 25.99.
In the 100 butterfly event, Petertonjes was tops in 58.67 and Wennerholm followed in a time of 1:11.01. Guerrieri won the 100 in 55.60 and Elias Kolb was second in 59.28. Luci-Bernard was first in the 500 free, making his final touch in 5:45.61 and Barzetti was second, making his final touch in 6:00.89.
In the 200 free relay, Hayden Bobowick, Elias Kolb, Luci-Bernard, and Kwarcinski came in with the fastest time in 1:42.79. The quartet of Wennerholm, Duncan Kolb, Ache, and Petertonjes was next in 1:44.17.
Oliver Clancy was fastest to the finish in the 100 backstroke race in 1:07.03 and Guerrieri was next in 1:07.57. Kwarcinski won the 100 breaststroke event in 1:08.88 and Finn Clancy was second in 1:13.56.
Newtown’s 400 free relay contingent of Bobowick, Oliver Clancy, Finn Clancy, and Guerrieri was first in 4:05.40. Elias Kolb, Barzetti, Stone, and Luci-Bernard came in second in 4:14.60.
