Brianna Schoffstall First In All Around As Gymnasts Get Regular Season Underway
The regular season is underway for Newtown High School’s gymnastics team. Although the Nighthawks have been shorthanded — due in part to injuries and illness — out of the gate, the Nighthawks have had some impressive performances.
Newtown began the season with a second-place team finish among six squads in a meet at New Milford High on January 12, then took second place again with Brianna Schoffstall tops in the all around at a January 15 competition at Newtown Gymnastics Academy.
In the meet at New Milford, the host Green Wave came out on top with 128.9 points. Newtown, despite having two less gymnasts than the Wave, was a close second with a score of 125.4. Schoffstall scored an 8.3 on vault, 8.85 on bars, 9.4 for first place on balance beam, and 7.0 on floor to take second in the all around with a score of 34.45.
Kelsey Brennan scored a 7.6 on vault, 7.0 on bars, 8.6 on beam, and 7.7 for her floor routine, good for eight in the all around with a score of 30.9. Eva Fenaroli had an 8.25 on vault, 6.45 on bars, 8.0 on beam, and 7.0 on floor for tenth in the all around with a 29.7. Camila Collesian earned a 7.9 on vault, 6.9 on bars, 7.25 on beam, and 7.4 on floor for tenth in the all around with a score of 29.45. Also competing for Newtown in the season-opening meet were Sadie Boyajian who scored an 8.1 on vault and 7.65 on beam.
In the January 15 meet, the Nighthawks had only four competitors available and took second among four teams with a score of 123.75; New Milford was first with a 125.15. Schoffstall won a pair of events and took second in two others to claim the top all around score. Schoffstall was second on vault with an 8.85, won the bars competition with a 9.1, won the balance beam routine with an 8.7, and earned second on the floor with a 9.0, just behind second-place all around finisher Regan Williams of New Milford who scored 9.05 on the floor.
Brennan was seventh overall with an 8.4 on vault, 7.2 on bars, 7.4 on beam, and 8.0 on floor for an all around score of 31.0. Boyajian came in eighth with a 7.6 on vault, 7.0 on bars, 7.6 on beam, and 7.2 on floor for an all around of 29.4. Collesian came in tenth highlighted by a 7.8 on vault, 7.1 on the beam, and 7.6 on floor and an all around score of 27.7.
