Two Late Newtown Ambulance Trustees Honored
Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Association Board of Trustees recently hosted the families of two late trustees — who dedicated many years to the board — for a tree dedication event.
Two trees have been planted in honor of James Mooney Sr and Harrison Waterbury in front of NVA’s headquarters at 6 Washington Square.
Mooney has the distinction of being the only person who volunteered first as EMT and chief of the Corps and then years later was elected as a trustee. He was a Captain of the CT State Police and also served as a Newtown Selectman.
Mooney also had an important role on the committee to build the new ambulance headquarters.
His widow Adele and members of the Mooney family, including retired Newtown Police Officer Jim Jr, were present for the dedication.
Waterbury served the board well as Treasurer for almost seven years. A former longtime member of Newtown’s Board of Finance, Waterbury was also a member of St Rose Finance Committee.
He was a coach of several youth sports and remained a faithful follower of Niagara U sports, Yankees, and Giants.
His widow Geri and members of the Waterbury family were present for the dedication.
NVA Trustees President Malcolm McLachlan; Monsignor Bob Weiss, pastor of St Rose Church; and then-First Selectman Dan Rosenthal each spoke at the November 11 event.
Several EMTs, Trustees, and guests joined together for light refreshments and a tour of the building after the dedication.
