To the Editor:

“Property taxes account for approximately 92 percent of the general fund revenue,” according to Financial Director Bob Tait in the Town’s most recent Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). Although the current year town budget raised taxes by slightly more than one percent, the impact on taxpayers has been far more significant.

As most homeowners already know, this year’s property reevaluation resulted in an “eye-watering” shift in tax liability from commercial to residential properties, due primarily to changes in market values because of the pandemic. Worse still, it established a new higher baseline calculation for taxes until the next reval.

As costs increase, government spending continues to escalate, putting tremendous pressure on taxpayers. Elected officials have an obligation to find ways to limit that burden. The Board of Finance should take the initiative to ask tough questions, to separate “the required from the desired.” We need new voices who can bring a fresh look at how to provide the services that the Town is responsible for.

It is possible to be fiscally responsible while adding to the tax base, maintaining infrastructure, preserving open space, and supporting appropriate tax positive development. Working together with other town boards, these are areas that the Board of Finance should focus on as well, rather than just “rubber stamping” proposed budgets as submitted.

My years of management and financial experience have given me the skills and perspective to work successfully with these issues.

I am running because of my commitment to public service and most importantly my belief in an independent, nonpartisan Board of Finance. A Board that safeguards not only taxpayers’ funds but works hard for our entire community to ensure that all residents, and future generations can afford to live here and enjoy the quality of life we all deserve.
