BETHEL — Every autumn, Byrd’s Books celebrates all things avian with special titles, give-aways, and very special guests.

This year, Bird Week at the popular independent bookshop will take flight from Sunday, October 15, to Saturday, October 21. The week coincides with official World Migratory Bird Day events scheduled internationally throughout May and October. In 2023, their global campaign focuses on a timely message: “Water: Sustaining Bird Life.”

On Sunday, October 15, at 3 pm, Byrd’s Books will kick off the week with illustrator Bruce Degen, who will share his original artwork and describe how he matches art with text in his children’s books.

Of Magic School Bus fame, the local award-winning author and illustrator will also discuss his picture book, Scoot: A Tiny New York Bird with a Great Big Idea. About a sparrow who has the idea to help her bird friend navigate the lights in New York City during migration, Scoot is a great example of the delightful art produced by the celebrated Degen.

Then on Wednesday, October 18, at 7 pm, Byrd’s Books will welcome back Kate Pratt of the Audubon Center at Bent of the River to do a presentation entitled “How to Monitor Your Bluebird Boxes and Be a Good Landlord.”

As the educator and volunteer coordinator of the 700-acre nature sanctuary in Southbury, Pratt will also discuss bird migration and how to assist our avian travelers.

Copies of Scoot, birding guides, and other bird-related items will be available to purchase throughout the week. Reservations for both events are highly recommended due to limited seating space. For reservations and additional information visit the Events pages at ByrdsBooks.com

Byrd’s Books is at 178 Greenwood Avenue, across from Bethel Public Library. Author discussions and book group gatherings are regularly added to its calendar.

Hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm; Sundays, noon to 4 pm. For directions or other information, call 203-730-2973.
