Managing Environmental Resources Will Be Top Priority

To the Editor:

I was disappointed that members of the Newtown Legislative Council voted to repeal ordinances that focused on reducing plastic waste and banning fracking waste in Newtown. In addition, the repeal was added at the last minute to an agenda for a meeting right before the 2022 December holidays. The way the repeal was handled did not feel transparent or representative of the concerns of the public.

Following those repeals however, Newtown accepted a grant to pilot a waste reduction and composting program at the transfer station and many residents have signed up to participate. This is a step in the right direction to address our waste management challenges. Exploring different approaches that balance environmental considerations and cost, like the pilot underway, must continue to be a priority.

Waste management can be viewed through many lenses — ethical, existential, and economic. No matter the point of view, focusing proactively on these challenges avoids costly and time-consuming remediation efforts and continues to make Newtown a place where people can thrive today and in the future.

I am running for a seat on the Legislative Council representing District 3 and, if elected, prudent and fiscally responsible management of our environmental resources will be a top priority.

Our slate of Democrats offer experience and know-how to proactively and constructively lead our town.

The ticket is being led by Dan Cruson and Michelle Embree Ku. Many residents already know Dan and Michelle from their many years of service to our community. They are examples of individuals who operate in a bipartisan manner to solve problems facing Newtown residents. They listen, collaborate, and deliver.

Municipal elections matter. Please take the time to learn about me and all our candidates at Newtownctdemocrats.org and please vote on November 7.

Thank you,

Doria Linnetz
