Six goal scorers found the net and five teammates had assists in a 7-0 victory for the Newtown High School girls’ soccer team on September 30. Visiting Bunnell of Stratford, which came into the game with just one win, had a depleted bench due to injuries and illness and was no match for the Nighthawks.

“We knew the goals were coming. It was just a matter of being in the right spots,” said Coach Adam Bourret, whose team members passed, and possessed, the ball well to generate scoring chances.

The first goal came when Kenzie Del Pozo dribbled down the right wing and crossed to Ella Morits who took a touch then buried a shot into the left corner of the goal. Sydney Oltran capitalized off a pass from Leah Morris for a 2-0 lead. Lyla Kopp got the next two net-finders, the first assisted by Sara Premus. Brooke Jackson scored on a long-range shot from outside the 18-yard box. Lola Kessler dribbled through the defense and scored a goal assisted by Jackson. Morris scored a pretty goal on a perfectly-placed shot, assisted by Oltran, when she kicked the ball from the right side into the far upper corner of the net, just barely under the crossbar and inside the post.

Bunnell’s players had to stay on the field for the entire game. Newtown, conversely, utilized a chance to see its substitutes in game action for a portion of the late afternoon.

The Nighthawks bounced back from a 2-0 loss at New Fairfield on September 28 and did so with Newtown Soccer Club youth players on hand. The young players got to stand with the Nighthawks on the field before the game and compete on the Blue & Gold Stadium turf at halftime.

“It was a good day for the girls to have the youth kids here. It’s a fun event,” Bourret said.

It was another good game for the Nighthawks when they hosted Kolbe Cathedral on October 3 and won 6-0. Oltran and Kopp both scored twice and Eren Weiss and Nikki Tabor also netted goals.
