The Do Not Call Registry Does Not Work

To the Editor:

I just read the letter “Robocall Abuse Has To Stop!,” and I’d like to make some comments.

1. The Do Not Call Registry does exist. Phone numbers can be registered through the Federal Trade Commission by visiting donotcall.gov.

2. The Do Not Call Registry does not work. Most robocalls and illegal telemarketing calls use faked (“spoofed”) Caller IDs and most originate outside the US. The callers ignore the Registry.

3. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are trying to prevent robocalls, but they are not succeeding.

4. I have reported thousands of these calls to both the FTC and the FCC. So far this year, I have reported over 850 calls.

5. The FTC and the FCC are trying to prevent the calls from ever getting to us, but more needs to be done to prosecute individual callers.

Earlier this year, I received over 60 calls from one scammer in New Jersey. He claimed I hadn’t paid my phone bill and I was supposed to send payment to a company in New Jersey. I reported this scam to local, county, and state officials in New Jersey as well as to the FTC and the FCC. I provided relevant email addresses, postal addresses. and even recordings of some of the calls from the scammer. But nothing happened.

Clearly, much more needs to be done to prevent robocalls and illegal telemarketing calls.
