Multiple first responder agencies responded to South Main Street at Cold Spring Road around 6:15 am Thursday, August 3, following a multiple-vehicle crash there. The major thoroughfare is expected to be closed for much of the day, while Eversource crews replace a utility pole that was broken into three pieces by the crash.

The incident involved a 2020 Chevrolet Silverado, a 2007 Mazda3, and four additional vehicles.

Following a collision between the identified sedan and truck, which destroyed a utility pole in front of Patty's Pantry, two small SUVs that had been traveling south were initially trapped under wires. One of the SUVs reportedly rear-ended another SUV. A sixth vehicle, traveling north, was also trapped vehicles under the wires following the collision.

Three people were taken to the hospital. The extent of their injuries is unknown but were reportedly non-life-threatening.

Botsford Fire Rescue, Newtown Police Department; Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Bethel Fire Ambulance and Stony Hill Ambulance, and at least one paramedic all responded to the crash.

The Eversource crew responded, first to de-energize the area and then to replace a utility pole broken into three pieces when the truck hit it. The crash closed South Main Street between its intersections with Cold Spring and Botsford Hill-Meadowbrook roads for hours.

Detours were put into place by Public Works.

The Chevrolet and Mazda were both towed from the scene. The Chevrolet was reportedly carrying explosives, which were unloaded after the power was turned off and before the truck was towed.

Additional details are not available at this time.

Thursday’s was the second crash in just over three months at that location. In April, a 39-year-old Bridgeport man told police he looked at his phone while operating his 2004 Jeep Liberty southbound in the same area. The Jeep left the west side of the road, striking a utility pole and then a metal picnic table in front of Patty’s Pantry. The driver was uninjured.
