Newtown Woman Arrested For Fairfield Pedestrian Death
A Newtown woman was arrested on a warrant by the Fairfield Police Department in connection with an incident where a pedestrian was struck and killed.
Meghan Rice, 51, turned herself in to the Fairfield Police Department headquarters on July 17 on charges of negligent homicide with a motor vehicle, failure to drive right and traveling unreasonably fast for a June 23 incident that killed Meghan Raveis, 45, of Fairfield.
According to sources, Rice was traveling south on Redding Road in a 2022 Jeep Wagoneer at approximately 3 pm on June 23, when she drifted across the centerline into the oncoming travel lane, and then off the road. Rice reportedly hit a mailbox before striking Raveis, who was thrown approximately 30 feet. Rice had three children in the car; she was employed in Fairfield as a nanny.
The warrant states that Fairfield Police found no signs that Rice was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, nor did they find evidence that she was texting and driving.
After striking Raveis, Rice moved back into the southbound lane and stopped, then called 911 and reported the accident.
Sources say that multiple people in the area stopped and attempted to render medical assistance to Rice, who was then taken to St Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport. Raveis was pronounced dead at about 3:35 pm the day of the crash.
According to her obituary, Raveis has three children, was the managing director of the William Raveis Charitable Fund, and was a former soccer standout at both the high school and college level.
Following her arrest, Rice was released on a $100,000 bond and is due in court on July 31.
