To the Editor:

I am writing in response to the recent editorial titled “Mothers Like No Others.” While I appreciate the importance of fostering a healthy public dialogue, I find it necessary to address the article’s unfair generalization of “Moms” and the misguided assumptions made about their intentions.

It is crucial to acknowledge that not all mothers who advocate for their children’s education belong to a single group or adhere to the same ideology. The use of “Moms” in quotation marks throughout the article appears to stereotype and diminish the legitimate concerns of mothers who are passionate about their children’s well-being. By doing so, you undermine the diversity of perspectives within our community.

Moreover, the editorial implies that the actions and beliefs of one group, namely “Moms For Liberty,” are representative of all parents in Newtown who have recently spoken up in advocacy. This assumption is both misleading and unfair. Many parents, including fathers and caregivers, participate in various groups and organizations that advocate for their children’s interests. Painting an entire demographic with a broad brush based on the actions of a few perpetuates division within our community.

I strongly believe in encouraging every parent and caregiver to advocate for their children’s best interests. If connecting with other “moms” or like-minded individuals helps in that endeavor, then I wholeheartedly support it. It is worth noting that when other advocacy groups attended a “troublemaker” training, there was no editorial addressing the concern of providing parents with strategies for harassing school board members and fellow parents, behavior that sounds a little “extremist.”

It is disheartening to see such one-sidedness in The Newtown Bee lately, particularly when there are valid arguments on both sides of the issue that impact Newtown.

I believe in promoting open discussions that embrace diverse perspectives. By engaging in respectful and inclusive dialogue, we can effectively tackle the challenges our community faces while nurturing an environment that prioritizes the well-being and development of our children.

Sincerely,

Kara Dogali — One of the “Moms”

Newtown
