Newtown Historical Society is sponsoring History Camp for children ages 8-10 again this summer. The camp is a tradition spanning 19 years and offers an immersive experience of Newtown and American history with a variety of hands-on activities.

The program is presented at the historical society’s headquarters, The Matthew Curtiss House, at 44 Main Street.

Co-Founder Gordon Williams said there are activities that fill the week, all focused on the era the camp is set in.

“We use our hammers and make our own lanterns, weave reed baskets, make pies and bake them in a roaring fire, make horn books like those that were used many years ago,” Williams told The Newtown Bee.

Adult chaperones also escort campers from The Matthew Curtiss House to Newtown Meeting House, at 31 Main Street, where the group learns about Colonial era religion.

“On our final day we have a great time making our own ice cream as well as fighting a fire using a bucket brigade just as they used to do,” Williams added.

This year’s camp is scheduled for Monday through Friday, July 17-21. Sessions will meet 9 am to noon. An afternoon session will be added if the morning session fills.

Cost is $175 per camper ($150 Newtown Historical Society members).
