What a showing by Newtown High School's girls' and boys' track and field teams in the South-West Conference Championships, at Bunnell High in Stratford, on May 22. Both teams won championships behind fast sprints, solid distance runs, great jumps, and long throws. Both teams won convincingly.

The girls scored 128 points and runner-up Bethel had 116.5; the boys logged 177.5 and Bethel took home another second-place finish with 116.5.

Not only was it a double Newtown win, but also a Becky times two triumph. The girls are led by Head Coach Becky Bourret and the boys by Head Coach Becky Osborne, who noted that this was the Newtown boys' program's first conference championship since the old WCC days, back in the 1990s.

"It's very exciting. This is a big deal," Osborne said of both programs taking home the trophy.

Osborne said the coaching staff worked throughout the season to put individual athletes in the right events to succeed and that they did the rest.

"We set them up and the boys just knocked it out of the park," she said. "This is huge. I'm so proud of the boys. They really did this as a team."

For Bourret, it was a nice way to spend any day, but an even better way to celebrate her birthday.

"Super proud. We always have a chance and it's always if we can hit right on the right day, and we did," she said. "Everybody did what they were supposed to do."

Especially Aashini Shetty who earned two first-place finishes in jumping events and a pair of runner-up spots in hurdling competitions. Shetty won the long jump with a leap of 16-4.5 and took first in the triple jump with a 34-9.25. Shetty was second in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 16.11 and second in the 300 hurdles in 47.93.

The 4x800 relay of Keira Budge, Clara D’Amico, Ryann Heim-Sherwood, and Hannah Snayd was first in 9:54.39.

Soheib Dissa scored key points for the boys winning the 800 in a time of 1:57.46 and the 1600 in 4:15.39. Dissa was second in the 3200 in 4:15.39.

Kevin Murray won the 110 hurdles, clocking in at 15.33.

The 4x100 relay of Aydyn Gonzalez, Caleb Smith, Brock Dukate, and Dylan Magazu was first in 43.84.

Smith won the high jump competition, clearing the bar at 6 feet, and Oliver Guzy took first in the long jump with a 21 foot effort. NHS placed one, two, three in the long jump with Elias Brady logging 20-10.75 and Gabriel Appiah recording a 20-6.
