Toyota Hits Ram

Newtown Police report Michael Lindgren, 55, of Charlottesville, Va., operating a 2016 Toyota Corolla, was traveling southbound on Main Street at 3:27 pm April 15. He was traveling behind a 2016 Ram Truck 1500 operated by Randolph Adis, 54, of Newtown. Police say Adis stopped to turn left onto School House Hill Road. Lindgren attempted to stop behind him, but the front end of his vehicle struck the rear end of Adis’ vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Lindgren was issued a written warning for failure to keep a reasonable distance apart.

Struck Tree

Newtown Police report Laurie Paivo, 59, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling eastbound on Laurel Trail at 10:22 am April 21. Her vehicle left the roadway to the left and struck a tree.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

Paivo was issued a verbal warning for failure to keep right on a curve.

Hit Parked Tractor Trailer

Newtown Police report Abdirisaaq Belel, 26, of Trumbull, operating a 2009 Subaru Forester, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 4:13 am April 23. An unoccupied 2021 Freightliner M2 106 tractor trailer owned by Christian Zuniga of Danbury was parked in the parking area of 352 South Main Street. Police say Belel’s vehicle crossed the double yellow lines into the southbound lane, and off the roadway, traveling into the parking area of 352 Main Street and striking the tractor trailer.

Belel was evaluated at the scene but refused transport. His vehicle was towed.

Belel was issued a verbal warning for failure to drive right and driving too fast for conditions.

Fender Bender At St Rose

Newtown Police report Margaret Walsh, 87, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2020 Toyota Prius, was in the parking lot of 45 Church Hill Road at 10:45 am April 23. She was behind a 2018 Honda CR-V operated by Susan Cinquegrana, 64, of Tuftonboro, N.H. Both vehicles were in a travel lane in the lot. Walsh thought Cinquegrana’s vehicle began moving so she moved forward, and the front of her vehicle struck the rear of Cinquegrana’s.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Following Too Closely

Newtown Police report Geljen Sherpa, 54, of Bethel, operating a 2017 Honda Pilot, was traveling southbound on Main Street at 8:42 pm April 23. He was traveling behind a 2021 Mazda CX5 operated by Hilary Nolan, 32, of Hudson, N.Y. Police say Nolan stopped for traffic at a red light and the front of Sherpa’s vehicle struck the rear of her vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Sherpa was issued a verbal warning for following too closely.

Rear-Ended SUV

Newtown Police report Pamela Ortega, 29, of Bethel, operating a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe, was traveling on Elm Drive, approaching the intersection of South Main Street, at 4:03 pm April 24. Lisa Nobes, 39, of Monroe, operating a 2013 Honda CR-V, was stopped at the intersection of Elm Drive and South Main Street. Ortega’s vehicle rear-ended Nobes’ vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Ortega was issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Witnesses Sought

Newtown Police report William Campbell, 74, of Newtown, operating a 2014 Subaru Forester, was traveling west on School House Hill Road at 10:55 am April 24. The vehicle crossed over the centerline, left the roadway to the left and climbed a small hill, causing damage to landscaping. Police say the vehicle then reversed down the hill, went back across the roadway, and down an embankment.

Campbell was transported to Danbury Hospital for possible injuries. The vehicle was towed.

The incident is still being investigated by the Newtown Police Department. Any witnesses are asked to call Officer Mulhall at 203-426-5841. A photo of the incident was included in last week’s police report.

Ring Found

Newtown Police report at 4:30 pm April 24, a gold colored special interest ring was turned in to the Newtown Police Department after having been found near the intersection of Lakeview Terrace and Spring Trail.

The owner of the ring is asked to contact Officer Facto or Sergeant Wisentanner of the Newtown Police Department at 203-426-5841.

Collision Turning Left

Newtown Police report Daniel Vivone, 74, of Bethel, operating a 2020 Buick Regal, was traveling south on Elm Drive at 2:08 pm April 25. Elizabeth Taylor, 37, of Woodbury, operating a 2019 Hyundai Kona, was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street. Police say Vivone turned left from Elm Drive onto Sugar Street, and while turning, his vehicle struck Taylor’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Taylor’s vehicle was towed.

Vivone was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way while making a left turn.

Unsafe Lane Change

Newtown Police report Samuel Melendez, 49, of Beacon Falls, was traveling westbound on Church Hill Road at 7:48 am April 25. He was traveling behind a 2011 BMW 328xi operated by Sitranie Hensel, 66, of Sandy Hook. Melendez attempted to change lanes into a right turn only lane and the two vehicles made contact.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Melendez was issued a verbal warning for making an unsafe lane change.

Sideview Mirrors Connect

Newtown Police report David Butz, 49, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2019 Ram 1500 Limited, was traveling northbound on Mt Pleasant Road at 5:43 pm April 25. A Ford F150 was traveling southbound on Mt Pleasant Road. A disabled, uninvolved vehicle was parked on the northbound shoulder of the roadway. Police say Butz moved his vehicle closer to the center of the double yellow line and the Ford F150 came over the double yellow line, causing the sideview mirrors of both vehicles to connect. The Ford then left the scene.

No injuries were reported. No vehicles were towed.

Struck Traffic Sign

Newtown Police report Mohammad Elawa, 19, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2004 Toyota Camry, was traveling westbound on Wasserman Way, approaching Mile Hill Road South, at 11:18 am April 27. The vehicle skidded off the right side of the roadway, colliding with a yellow traffic sign.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Elawa was issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.

Slid On Wet Pavement

Newtown Police report Joseph Favretto, 42, of Seymour, operating a 1994 USPS truck, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road at 11:21 am April 27. He was traveling behind a 2008 Acura RDX operated by Jennifer Munz, 52, of Danbury. Police say Munz stopped in traffic in the area of Pole Bridge Road. Favretto attempted to stop, but slid on the wet pavement and the front end of his vehicle struck the rear end of Munz’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Favretto’s vehicle was towed.

Favretto was issued a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Reckless Endangerment Charge

Newtown Police arrested Byron Jaramillo-Pina, 33, of Danbury, at 4:45 pm April 28, on the charges of reckless driving and first-degree reckless endangerment. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of May 11.

Too Fast For Conditions

Newtown Police report Alex Frutos, 20, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2010 Nissan Altima, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way on a curve in rainy weather conditions at 3:39 pm April 30. Frutos lost control of his vehicle and the front end of his vehicle struck a guardrail off the right shoulder. Police say the vehicle then traveled back into the eastbound travel lane, then off the right shoulder again, striking the same guardrail a second time.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Frutos was issued a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

Hit Turning Into Drive

Newtown Police report Joan Bartolotta, 74, of Newtown, operating a 2005 Honda CR-V, was traveling southbound on South Main Street at 3:51 pm May 1. Heather McKeown, 26, of Newtown, operating a 2023 Hyundai Kona, was traveling northbound on South Main Street. Police say Bartolotta made a left turn in front of McKeown to turn into a driveway, and the front right corner of McKeown’s vehicle struck the right rear quarter panel of Bartolotta’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Bartolotta was issued a written warning for failure to grant right of way at a driveway.

DUI Arrest

Newtown Police arrested Santos Salvador-Rendon, 33, of Newtown, at 4:55 pm May 1, on the charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs with a child under 18 as a passenger, and operation of a motor vehicle without a license. He was released on a $500 bond with a court date of May 16.
