Ruining It For The Kids

To the Editor:

I write this after reading about book banning efforts in The Newtown Bee.

I speak from my 30-40 yrs experience in organizing and coaching sports for boys and girls in Newtown and Wethersfield in my life. I am retired now — 78 years old.

The main thing that ruins sports for kids and leads to coaches quitting is too much parental involvement. High school coaches will tell you that’s the main reason they quit.

Watch a youth game and you will see the same book banners yelling at the coach and refs from the sidelines.

Don’t get involved in book banning. Let the pros who have experience decide, your kids will be better off for it.

Boundaries are important. Everyone knows examples of coaches who have lost their job when after crossing the lines of appropriate behavior, “pros” or not. Having seen a lot of the material being discussed, I believe most reasonable people would question if the goals, no matter how well intended, could be accomplished without such sexually explicit content.

There are no ‘pros’ when it comes to this issue. Parents have the right and duty to question what is happening in the school classrooms and school libraries. The supposed ‘pros’ are pushing a particular agenda that was fostered under the previous Board of Ed. The new BoE is doing its job and listening to parents and working to transparently deliver the best for all children.
