Two people were transported to the hospital following a four-vehicle crash on the highway during the evening rush hour last week.

CT State Police report the multi-vehicle crash occurred at 5:12 pm Wednesday, March 15, on I-84 East between Exits 10 and 11.

According to the CSP report, a 2018 Nissan Rogue being operated by Jennifer Berube, 47, of Torrington, was in the high speed lane of I-84 East, approximately 500 yards west of the Exit 11 offramp.

At the same time, a 2022 Toyota 4Runner being operated by Aleksander Fjelderberg, 36, of Hitra, Ontario, and a 2020 Jeep Cherokee Limited being operated by Connor M. Printz, 36, of Woodbury, were traveling in the high speed lane. The 4Runner and the Cherokee both slowed for traffic in front of them.

Berube did not slow, however, and the Rogue crashed into the Cherokee. The Rogue then veered to the right and collided with a 2014 Toyota Sequoia being operated in the travel lane by Kathleen L. Piester, 51, of McClean, Vt.

The Sequoia subsequently sideswiped the 4Runner.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps sent two crews to the scene. A paramedic and Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue also responded to the crash, which closed the high speed and travel lanes. The crash and closure created extensive backups for well over an hour.

Piester and Printz were both transported to the hospital for possible injuries.

Fjelderberg and Berube were checked for injuries but declined medical attention.

The Cherokee, Rogue and Sequoia were all towed due to damage. The 4Runner was driven from the scene.

Berube was found at fault and issued an infraction by CSP for following too close resulting in a motor vehicle accident.
