Boys’ Swim Team Caps Regular Season With Win At New Milford

Newtown High School’s boys’ swimming team finished the regular season with a visit to New Milford on February 21, and the Nighthawks came out on top 98-59 to finish with a record of 6-3.

The 200 yard medley relay team of Peter Horan, Connor Kwarcinski, Max Luci-Bernard, and Gabe Petertonjes was first in a time of 1:46.59. The relay of James Guerrieri, Grant Carson, Kris Luci-Bernard, and John Barzetti came in second in 2:00.96.

Horan won the 200 freestyle in 2:06.64 and Guerrieri was third in 2:06.64. Newtown went one-two in the 200 individual medley race as Petertonjes finished in 2:17.53 and Carson came in at 2:18.52. NHS had another one-two in the 50 free with Kwarcinski finishing in 22.51, followed by Max Luci-Bernard in 23.08.

In the 100 butterfly event, Max Luci-Bernard was first in 1:01.34 and Barzetti took second, making his final touch in 1:12.18. Kwarcinski won the 100 free in 49.78 and Petertonjes came in third in the event with a time of 54.25. Kris Luci-Bernard won the 500 free, clocking in at 5:40.00 and Oliver Clancy took second in 5:48.33.

The 200 free relay contingent of Kwarcinski, Carson, and the Luci-Bernard brothers placed first in 1:39.95; the relay of Barzetti, Hayden Bobowick, Jeremiah Stone, and Braden Hazard came in third in 1:52.93.

Guerrieri won the 100 backstroke in a time of 1:05.02 and Hazard placed third in 1:18.15.

Newtown, with the team win locked up, exhibitioned the rest of the way. Carson recorded the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke event with a 1:10.32 and Bobowick was next in 1:19.40. The 400 free relay, comprising Petertonjes, Clancy, Guerrieri, and Luci-Bernard, swam Newtown’s best time in 3:51.59; the relay of Hazard, Barzetti, Noah Masotta, and Stone finished the race in 4:25.03.

The Nighthawks will compete in the South-West Conference Championships, at Masuk High in Monroe on Friday, March 3, starting at 5 pm.
