“Using Periodicals in Genealogical Research” will be the topic of the next monthly meeting of the Genealogy Club of Newtown, scheduled for Wednesday, March 8, via Zoom.

Genealogy Club meetings are co-sponsored by C.H. Booth Library, and all are welcome to attend. They are held on the second Wednesday of each month, September through June, at 7 pm.

This month’s speaker will be Albert Fiacre, chairman of the board of directors of The Godfrey Library in Middletown. The Godfrey is a nonprofit, archive library that specializes in genealogy, biographies and history.

Fiacre has been affiliated with the library since 2003, a staff member since 2009, and a board member since 2015.

For his Newtown presentation, Fiacre will discuss major scholarly journals that every genealogist should be familiar with, and how to search them.

Periodicals are an often-overlooked source when conducting research. Guests will learn about indexes that can lead to articles on ancestors or families of interest, and learn how to avoid some pitfalls associated with these searches.

Fiacre will also introduce regional publications that may shed light on a particular area where ancestors lived.

Prior to retirement, Fiacre was a senior financial executive at several banks in both Connecticut and New York City. He earned a BA from Middlebury College and an MBA from NYU.

He has been interested in Genealogy for many years and is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. Fiacre earned his Certificate in Genealogical Research from Boston University in 2016. He authored a family genealogy which earned awards from both the National Genealogical Society’s “Award for Excellence: Genealogy and Family History Book” in 2018, and the Connecticut Society of Genealogists’ Certificate of Achievement for the best genealogy in 2019.

All are invited to enjoy the program. Those interested are asked to register by March 6 by sending an email to genclubnewtownct.secretary@gmail.com. An invitation to join the Zoom meeting will be sent to those who register.

Those planning to participate are asked to sign in around 6:45 pm so that everyone will be admitted before the program begins at 7.

Albert Fiacre will present the next program hosted by The Genealogy Club of Newtown and C.H. Booth Library.
