Nighthawk Boys’ Swim Past Barlow-Bethel Behind Ten First-Place Swims
Newtown High School’s boys’ swim team defeated the visiting Joel Barlow of Redding-Bethel co-op 97-64 on January 31. The Nighthawks placed one-two in six events and had firsts in ten of the 11 events; the Nighthawks locked up the team win with a dominating effort through the first nine events and exhibitioned the last two races.
The 200 yard medley relay team of Peter Horan, Connor Kwarcinski, Kris Luci-Bernard, and Hayden Bobowick was first in a time of 1:49.12. Newtown’s B relay of Oliver Clancy, Grant Carson, Jeremiah Stone, and Brayden Hazard came in second in 2:02.74.
In the 200 freestyle race, Gabe Petertonjes was first in 2:00.50 and was followed by teammate James Guerierri in 2:05.38.
Horan took first in the 200 individual medley event with a time of 2:08.15, and Carson placed third in 2:22.98. In the 50 free, Kwarcinski was first in 23.04 seconds, Luci-Bernard came in runner-up in 25.47, and Bobowick was third in 26.88.
In the 100 butterfly, the one event win for Barlow-Bethel, Petertonjes gave Newtown its fastest finish, placing third and completing the race in 1:02.08.
Newtown went one-two-three in the 100 free as Bobowick came in first in 1:00.57 and John Barzetti placed second in 1:02.26, edging out Clancy who finished with a time of 1:02.34.
Kwarcinski won the 500 free, making his final touch in 59.52 and Guerierri was second in the 500 with a time of 5:44.38.
In the 200 free relay, Horan, Bobowick, Guerierri, and Petertonjes came in first in 1:39.40. The contingent of Stone, Jason Wasilnak, Hazard, and Barzetti came in third in 1:55.57.
Horan won the 100 backstroke race, clocking in at 1:39.40 and Clancy finished third in 1:08.42. Carson was the first finisher in the 100 breaststroke race, recording a time of 1:11.18 and Stone was next in 1:19.18.
In the 400 free relay, the best time went to Petertonjes, Luci-Bernard, Guerierri, and Kwarcinski with a 3:40.22. The third-fastest time in the event was turned in by Barzetti, Hazard, Clancy, and Carson with a 4:16.56.
The Nighthawks will visit Masuk of Monroe on Tuesday, February 7 at 6 pm and return home February 14 to take on Bunnell-Stratford, also at 6 o’clock.
