Backed Into Car

Newtown Police report Brian Clavette, 37, of Southbury, operating a 2015 Chevrolet Equinox, was parked in a parking spot on the western side of Newtown Savings Bank, 32 Church Hill Road, at 11:39 am November 12. Kamalesh Makayee, 57, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2018 Nissan Murano, was halfway in a spot to the right of Clavette. Clavette’s vehicle backed into Makayee’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Did Not Notice Collision

Newtown Police report Julia Dimyan, 16, of Newtown, operating a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, was making a right turn out of a driveway on Berkshire Road at 11:43 am November 16, as Robert Stampp, 80, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2017 Subaru Outback, was traveling eastbound on Berkshire Road, passing the driveway. The rear driver’s side wheel of the Jeep vehicle collided with the front passenger side fender of the Subaru.

Dimyan left the scene and her registration plate information was obtained by occupants of Stampp’s vehicle. Dimyan was tracked down and when questioned why she left the scene, she claimed she did not know she collided with Stampp’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Dimyan was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way from a private driveway.

Unsafe Backing

Newtown Police report Ninfa Morocho-Criollo, 31, of Danbury, operating a 2009 Subaru Forester, was backing out of a driveway on Beckett Village at 3:04 pm November 17. Evelyn Okane, 17, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2014 Nissan Frontier, was parked across the street from the driveway. The rear passenger’s side bumper of the Subaru struck the rear driver’s side wheel well of the Nissan.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Morocho-Criollo was issued a verbal warning for unsafe backing.

Struck Fence, Tree

Newtown Police report Gabriella Durkin, 26, of Bethel, operating a 2012 Acura MDX Tech, was traveling westbound on Sugar Street at 2:51 am November 26, when the vehicle ran off the roadway to the right and struck a fence on the westbound shoulder, before dropping into a ditch. The vehicle continued traveling 20 yards further before striking a tree and coming to a stop parallel to Scudder Road.

No injuries were reported. Durkin’s vehicle was towed from the scene.

Durkin was issued an infraction for making a restricted turn and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Hit Barn Gutter

Newtown Police report Hayley Marsden, 23, of Shelton, operating a 2022 Ram delivery truck, was making a right turn into a driveway on Hyvue Drive at 7:40 pm November 26. While making the turn, Marsden’s vehicle collided with a barn on the property. The right rear cargo door of the vehicle struck a gutter that was affixed to the barn.

No injuries were reported. Marsden’s vehicle was not towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Failure To Grant Right Of Way

Newtown Police report Roger Post, 66, of Newtown, operating a 2007 Honda CR-V, was traveling westbound on Platts Hill Road at 6:24 pm November 28. Kyle O’Brien, 36, of Newtown, operating a 2016 Honda Pilot, was traveling southbound on Brushy Hill Road. Post came to a stop and proceeded into the intersection, when the front bumper of the CR-V struck the driver’s side front and rear doors of the Pilot.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Post was issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.

Reckless Driving

Newtown Police report Jackson Harris, 36, of Stamford, operating a 2014 Isuzu NPR box truck, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 11:24 am November 29, when it crossed over the center line, hit a fence, and collided with a tree.

Harris was treated for minor injuries. His vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.

Harris was issued a summons for reckless driving.

Cherokee Hits Civic

Newtown Police report Annamarie Alonza, 65, of Oxford, operating a 2019 Jeep Cherokee, was at the intersection of Hattertown Road and Poverty Hollow Road at 5:13 pm November 29. Dontell Barthelemy, 32, of Bridgeport, operating a 2014 Honda Civic, was at the same intersection. Alonza proceeded into the intersection believing she was clear to proceed. The Jeep struck the rear passenger side of the Honda.

No injuries were reported. Barthelemy’s vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action is mentioned in the report.

Hit By Falling Branch

Newtown Police report Rogue Osorio, 34, of Newtown, operating a 2011 Dodge Ram 2500, was traveling southbound on Mt Pleasant Road at 2:42 pm November 30, when the vehicle was struck by a falling branch. The top of the vehicle, the bed cover, and the windshield were all damaged.

No injuries were reported and the vehicle was not towed.

Following Too Closely

Newtown Police report Oliveira De, 21, of Fairfield, operating a 2019 Toyota Corolla, was traveling southbound on Main Street at 3:01 pm November 30. He was traveling behind a 2014 Honda CR-V operated by Roger Jackson, 75, of Fairfield. Jackson slowed down for traffic and De did not stop in time, and the front of De’s vehicle struck the rear of Jackson’s vehicle, causing minor damage to both.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

De was issued a verbal warning for following too closely.

Failure To Comply With Traffic Signals

Newtown Police report BJ Saquipayaucapina, 24, of White Plains, N.Y., operating a 2008 Audi A4, was traveling inbound from Interstate 84 exit 11 at 5:53 am December 4. Saquipayaucapina told police he was unfamiliar with the area and unaware of the traffic control signals around the corner of the off ramp. Saquipayaucapina continued through the T intersection of exit 11 and Wasserman Way, striking the curb on the opposing roadside, coming to rest in the embankment off the road.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.

Saquipayaucapina was issued a verbal warning for failure to comply with traffic control signals.

Criminal Mischief Arrest

Newtown Police report Scott Kimball, 52, of Southbury, was arrested on December 5 on the charge of first-degree criminal mischief. Newtown PD was informed by Southbury Police Department that they had custody of Kimball after learning there was an active warrant for his arrest. He was transferred into the custody of Newtown Police.

The arrest stems from an investigation that took place in August 2022, in which it was alleged that Kimball damaged the property of another person.

He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of December 21.

Vehicle Struck By Fleeing Suspect

Newtown Police report a 2023 Kia Sportage owned by Bellaja Blerand, 27, of Ridgefield, was backed into a marked parking spot at 5 Queen Street, in the northernmost row outside of Barnwood Grill Restaurant, at 1:46 pm December 5. An unknown operator was fleeing police following an attempted fraudulent check cashing incident at Newtown Savings Bank on Church Hill Road (see related story). The operator was traveling northbound in the parking lot at a high rate of speed, and turned right into the parking lane that Blerand’s vehicle was parked in. The unknown driver then made an abrupt left turn through a parking spot next to Blerand’s vehicle, making contact with the lower front driver’s side bumper and front driver’s side tire. The unknown operator then drove over the grass and a sidewalk to flee onto Queen Street.

The unknown operator has not yet been identified and no license plate number was obtained.
