Snapshot: Wendy Devereaux
Occupation: I am the Senior Services Assistant at the Newtown Senior Center.
Family: I am married to Matthew Devereaux, who works for Interstate Lumber in Newtown, and we have one daughter, Kiah, who is a senior at Pomperaug High School.
Pets: I have two dogs. Charlie, a girl, and Benny are both adopted and around 10 or 11 years old. We just lost our little Buddy who had complications with diabetes. We also adopted a large white turkey; we have had her for three years this month! We also have eight chickens that we have had for about five years now.
What do you like to do in your free time? I wish that I had more free time! But when I do have some, I love just sitting with my husband and just relaxing outside.
What is your favorite book? Unfortunately, I haven’t had any time to read a book in a long time. I recently listened to a book, though, which I really loved, If You Ask Me: (And of Course You Won’t) by Betty White. She’s the best!
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? It would have to be my mother, Irene. She has always given me the best advice and always knew what to say to me to help me through all of the good and bad times of my life! She is always there for me and my brothers and is the most giving person I could ever know!
If you could spend the day with one person, who would you choose and why? Actually, any chance I get, I want to be with my daughter. She is getting older and ready to go to college soon. Any time she wants to be with me, I will change my day to spend time with her!
Who is your favorite musical artist? I have so many favorites, from 80’s rock bands to Harry Styles and Taylor Swift! I love to sing, so any song I can belt out I love to sing along to.
What is the greatest piece of advice you have ever been given? I am not sure who told me this, but the advice that I tell myself, friends, and family is, “Nothing stays the same!” Hang in there and it will definitely change. If you don’t like what is happening right now, hang on and it will change, but you have to make it what you want.
What is something you cannot live without? Time outside. I need time to connect with nature. I have to be outside or I start getting antsy! Not looking forward to the cold too much; it cuts back on my outside time.
What is your proudest accomplishment? My proudest accomplishment is raising my wonderful, kind-hearted, sweet daughter. I couldn’t have asked for a more wonderful daughter!
What is a meal/recipe your family has passed down to you? That would have to be lasagna. My Grandmother, Aunt, and Mom make this amazing lasagna. I haven’t the taste absolutely correct yet, but I’m close! There is not a “real” recipe. I have to practice more.
What is a tradition your family does that is important to you? The tradition that my family does that is important to me is being together during the holidays. I lived in Florida for over 20 years, so now that I am back in town with my family I don’t want to miss another holiday with them!
What would you like The Newtown Bee to cover in the future? That would be more stories about the Newtown Senior Center, of course. Make sure if you are a senior, come visit. You will want to join for sure!
