Sally Brockett, a local gardener, birder, and member of The Daytime Gardeners of North Haven, will present “The Marvelous Mason Bee: A Super Pollinator,” sharing information about the life and behavior of mason bees on November 9. She will be the guest speaker that evening for Town & Country Garden Club of Newtown.

The program will begin at 7 pm at Newtown Senior Center, 8 Simpson Street.

Guests will learn that just one of the tiny, non-aggressive busy bees does the work of 100 honey bees. They will also learn how to provide for these super pollinators so they will be attracted to their yard.

Brockett has a lifelong history as a gardener and enjoys nature for relaxation and exercise. Professionally, she has worked as a special education preschool teacher, and more recently as a Berard AIT Instructor/Practitioner in the same field. This work has given her the opportunity to travel to various states and countries and incorporate time for bird watching and nature photography during her travels.

Although birds are Brockett’s passion, she enjoys other things in nature such as butterflies, and even more recently, mason bees. She is fortunate that her husband, Walt, is a creative woodworker who can make custom designed birdhouses, feeders, and mason bee houses for her.

The Town & Country Garden Club is a small and energetic club which has been a staple of Newtown for almost 60 years. New members are always welcome.

In addition to offering similar gardening and horticultural monthly programs, the club designs and maintains three of Newtown’s main traffic islands, is involved in many community and volunteer events, actively supports the protection of Newtown’s environment, and offers scholarships to local students.
