Kwarcinski Breaks Pool Record As Swimmers Honor Seniors

Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team recognized its seniors — Maura Daly, Emma Fonck, Daniella Guerrieri, Kayleigh Troy, and Katie Yeaton — Senior Night, October 14, when Stratford visited. Then, Alexa Kwarcinski made things about the Class of 2025 as well. The Nighthawk sophomore broke the NHS pool record in the 100 yard breaststroke event with a time of 1:09.23.

That was one of many first-place finishes by the Nighthawks, who cruised to a 103-72 victory, sealing the team win after the 200 freestyle relay race and exhibitioning the final three events.

The 200 medley relay team of Ella Seaver, Grace Fischer, Kwarcinski, and Diellza Limani was first in a time of 2:01.21.

Zoe Petertonjes won the 200 freestyle race in 2:03.15. Fischer was first in the 200 individual medley in 2:24.27. Kwarcinski took first in the 50 with a time of 25.59.

Newtown’s divers were all very close in scoring. Ella Hall was first with a score of 182.10, Yeaton came in second with a score of 180.80, and Troy came in third with a tally of 179.20.

Petertonjes won the 100 butterfly race, making her final touch in 1:01.63. Limani was first in the 100 free in 58.68. Anna Shew finished first in the 500, clocking in at 5:55.72.

The 200 free relay team of Kwarcinski, Limani, Seaver, and Petertonjes was first in 1:46.59.

Fischer had the fastest time in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 1:06.14. The 400 free relay contingent of Shew, Fischer, Lauren Smiley, and Petertonjes had the fastest event time, finishing in 4:03.17.

Newtown had a challenging meet in a makeup with visiting Pomperaug of Southbury on October 17. The Nighthawks fell 99.5-86.5 but had some strong performances. The Hawks led or were tied through the first nine events of the meet.

The 200 medley relay of Seaver, Petertonjes, Fischer, and Kwarcinski was first in 1:57.54. Limani won the 200 free in 2:03.68. Kwarcinski came in first in the 200 IM in 2:18.22. Petertonjes won the 50 in 26.35.

Hall, Yeaton, and Troy again went one-two-three in the diving competition, led by Hall’s 201.65.

Petertonjes was first in the 100 fly with a time of 1:02.38. Limani won the 100 free in 56.59.

Kwarcinski was edged out for first in the 100 backstroke race, finishing in 1:04.70; Pomperaug’s top backstroker finished in 1:04.53. Fischer was second in the 100 breaststroke race in 1:12.44, just behind the winning time of 1:12.33.
