On October 17, 2022, Janet Marie (McLeod) Woycik, wife of Richard D. Woycik and loving mother to Kristin and Jennifer, passed away at the age of 77.

Janet, a long-time Newtown resident, was born on December 1, 1944, in Danbury, Conn., daughter of the late Clarence and Evelyn McLeod. She was a graduate of Brewster High School, Western Connecticut State University, and earned her Masters of Library Science at Arizona State University. In 1977, she moved to Newtown, Conn., where she raised her family. Janet was very active in her community.

On her 37th birthday, December 1, 1981, Janet started her dream job as the Director of the C.H. Booth Library in Newtown. During her 31 years, always keeping the library’s benefactress, Mary Hawley’s vision and wishes in mind, Janet contributed to bringing the library into a 21st Century, modern library. Some of Janet’s proudest accomplishments are the 1998 library expansion, organizing the first Newtown Turkey Trot, working year after year, with the Friends of the Library on their annual book sale, and with her friends Diana and Wayland Johnson, bringing the annual Ram’s Pasture Tree Lighting to life. It’s worth noting, Janet was most proud of this community tradition and the lights of the tree can be seen from her final resting place. Newtown resident Judge William Lavery served on the board of directors of the library with Janet, and he believed there were two people that have done the most for the C.H. Booth Library: the benefactress and Janet.

A dedicated volunteer, Janet served on numerous boards and organizations in the state and community. In her free time she loved reading, vacationing in Woods Hole, Cape Cod, with lifelong friends, golfing, and spending time with friends and family.

Janet was happiest when spending time with her five grandchildren. Besides her husband Richard, she is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Pirone (Jeff); her five grandchildren: Emma and Ethan Yohannan and Madison, Jake, and Karsen Pirone; her twin sister, Jeanne Kalmanson (Andy); her sister, Patricia McLeod; and her brother, John McLeod (Karen).

She was predeceased by her parents and her daughter, Kristin Yohannan Moore.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, October 24, 2022, at Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, from 5 to 8 pm. A private burial will be held.

Anyone wishing to honor Janet’s memory may make a donation to the following: The Newtown Park Gift Fund (with a memo “Tree Lighting Fund — Janet Woycik”), Newtown Parks and Recreation, 8 Simpson Street, Newtown CT 06470, or the C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street, Newtown CT 06470.

Janet lit up the Cyrenius Booth Library with her enthusiasm about reading, and meeting patrons at the circulation desk to talk about their favorite authors. She kept up with new authors and was always generous in her recommendations for readers of all ages. Her infectious laugh and good spirit will always be fondly remembered.
