Botsford Fire Welcomes Three New Members
Botsford Fire Rescue Company welcomed its three newest members to its ranks last week.
Bob Bonvini, Joe Doherty, and Patrick Doherty were sworn in to the company, one of five volunteer fire companies in Newtown, on Monday, October 3.
A semiretired financial advisor in private practice, Bonvini joined the volunteer fire and rescue company, he said, because he wanted to get involved in something new.
He and his wife have lived in Newtown nearly 30 years. They have adult children who have moved away, said Bonvini, who added he enjoyed “being challenged and learning new things. I thought about volunteering in some way, to give back to the community and I noticed that Botsford was looking for volunteers.”
Bonvini began a probationary period with Botsford Fire in late December 2021 “with no experience,” he said.
“It has been an amazing experience,” he added, “making new friends, training and learning so much, working with a great group of people who really care about what they do and the neighbors they serve.
One take-away for me is how committed the members are, giving many hours each week to this endeavor.
“I look forward to serving beside a great crew,” Bonvini also noted.
Joe Doherty comes “from a family of firefighters,” he said, and wanted to continue that tradition.
“I wanted to join for the tradition and to give back to my community,” he added. Joe has completed Fire I, an important training course for those entering the fire service.
Patrick Doherty, who already had experience volunteering elsewhere, said he joined BFR because his “family is all volunteers here in town including my brother and I wanted to give back to my community.”
Botsford Fire Rescue Company Inc is stationed at 315 South Main Street. It meets the first Monday evening of each month. It also conducts work details and drills on a regular basis.
