In 1982, “Cheers” began its 11-season run, “Just Say No” and “I pity the fool” both entered the vernacular, the first commercially available CD players hit the market, Diet Coke was introduced, and Ms Pac-Man became the first sequel to the global sensation that was Pac-Man.

That was also the year that in June, Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment released E.T., the Extra Terrestrial. The sci-fi family adventure about a gentle alien stranded on Earth, who is then befriended by a 10-year-old boy named Elliott (Henry Thomas) during his stay on this planet, became the highest grossing film of the year.

Edmond Town Hall, at 45 Main Street, will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the popular film’s release with six free screenings in October.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film stands as the movie with the longest theatrical run, reportedly screened for over a year upon its initial release.

The film also features Drew Barrymore, Peter Coyote, Dee Wallace and Robert MacNaughton. It was additionally the film debut for C. Thomas Howell.

Audiences are invited to enjoy screenings of E.T. at 1 and 7 pm Friday through Sunday, October 14-16. The screenings are all being sponsored by Ingersoll Auto of Danbury.

Meanwhile, this weekend’s movie offering is the recently released Where The Crawdads Sing.

Based on the best-selling 2018 novel of the same name by Delia Owens, screenings of the July release are planned for Friday through Sunday, September 2-4, at 1 and 7 pm each day.

Tickets are $3.50 for all shows, with a $1 discount offered to senior citizens for Friday’s matinee.

The mystery has a running time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, and is rated PG-13. It stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Taylor John Smith.
