Newtown’s first responders were sent to Sunset Hill Road Tuesday night, after a fire broke out inside a residential home there.

All five local fire companies, Newtown Police, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and a paramedic were dispatched to 7 Sunset Hill Road on August 23 following a report of a possible structure fire with someone trapped inside the dwelling.

Hook & Ladder Chief Chris Ward had command of the scene. Firefighters were at the house, he said, “within three or four minutes of being dispatched, and everyone was out of the house, including the dog, upon our arrival. There was no one inside.”

The 3,120-square-foot dwelling, according to the online assessor’s database, was constructed in 1938. Its co-owners are Iurie A. Schwartz and Allison S. Berman-Schwartz.

Sunset Hill is a steep, winding road just over one-quarter of a mile long that connects Currituck and Hanover roads.

Firefighters were able to quickly douse the fire, which was contained to one room on the second floor.

“There was some smoke and water damage,” Ward said. “We got there fast and Sandy Hook, which was just about to go to another call, also got there really fast. We had a good response.”

Firefighters were at the residence for just over an hour. They were dispatched just before 8 pm and most cleared just after 9. At least one fire marshal and police remained on the scene to continue the investigation into the fire.

The Office of the Fire Marshal confirmed that the fire was in just the one room.

The following day, Deputy Fire Marshal Dave Ober on August 24 could only tell The Newtown Bee that the incident “is under investigation.”

Ward said the house was secured for the evening. A team from the restoration firm JP Maguire was called to the home the following morning.

Debris from the room that had burned the previous night was still on the ground near the home. Slight scorch marks on the western side of the dwelling offered additional evidence of the previous night’s fire.
