On The Courts … Youth Basketball Highlights

Grade 7 Boys

Newtown 33, New Canaan 16: Newtown recorded its third win of the season behind a solid all around team effort. Mary Joe Rossi, Danielle Shine and Christie Vos Winkel led Newtown’s offense. The defense was led by Emily Maher, Tess Murray and Hope McMorran.

Ridgefield 45, Newtown 20: Ridgefield jumped out to a 17–4 first quarter lead by capitalizing on Newtown turnovers and never let up. Any hope of a Newtown rally was fleeting as the Bounce converted on less than 20% of their scoring opportunities.

Grade 6 Boys In-House

Nets 39, Semi-Pros 26: Bobby Archiere led with 15 points, and Nate Dowd tossed in 8 points along with 4 assists, for the Nets’ best offensive performance this season. Steven Tramontozzi and Curtis Giles spearheaded a tough defense grabbing 3 steals apiece, and David Corsi was aggressive under the hoop with 5 rebounds. James Burdette scored 15 points for the Semi-Pros on a variety of driving lay-ups and jump shots. Mark Dowling and Jared Tannenbaum combined to drop in 8 more points. Tommy Shaker led the defensive attack grabbing 8 rebounds, making 3 steals and causing many turnovers with his hustle.

Gators 27, Wolves 15: Bryce Decker led the team with 9 points. Jason Ferrari had a great defensive game while scoring 8 points and pulling down a number of rebounds. Robbie McCabe also played well on defense. Brian Raab dished out key passes and assists to his teammates. Dan Hamula played strong defense coming up with 3 steals. Michael Cirone led the Wolves’ offense with 7 points. Kevin Ovendorf added 4 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Eric Cascone controlled the paint on the defensive end and Kaj Djonne tallied 5 steals.

Celtics 40, Heat 29: In a tough game between rivals, the Celtic’s were eventually able to pull away at the end. The Celtic’s defense was led by Brennan “Windex” O’Sullivan and Ryan “The Thief” Whitton. Jon “The Shooter” Sherman and Albert “Airmail” Dean each had 16 points in the Celtic’s victory. For the Heat, Erik Street and Colin Reilly combined for 18 points in the loss. Sean McCafferty and Brad Kretz played strong games to help keep the score close until the Celtics pulled ahead in the end.

Dunkeys 37, Dragons 20: Stephen Grasso lead the Dunkeys with 16 points. Peter Manfredonia added 8. Mason Galanis played strong defense, including a blocked shot and Chris Horkachuck played a high effort game including a dive on the hardwood. Sawyer Conrad led the Dragons’ offense with 8 points and Colton Moroney added 6. Deegan Beauchemin handled the ball well. David Csordas and Tommy Rahr relied on their quickness against their bigger opponents and were effective under the boards while Bobby Lydon played suffocating defense.

Junkyard Dogs 38, Screaming Eagles 27: The unselfish team play of the Junkyard Dogs saw 7 different players score. Forest Speed had 8 points on a four-for-four shooting performance and Trevor Palmer netted 6 points. Nick “Rat” Rubino and Joey “Spider” Carrino spearheaded the aggressive Dog defense. Rubino, was a force on the boards. Carrino, the victim of multiple devastating screens, consistently picked himself off the floor to play lock-down defense at the point. For the Screaming Eagles, Jaret DeVellis led the team with 15 points and Ryan Sullivan had 4 points and 4 assists. “Sugar” Shane Quimby’s usual “in your face” defense and Bobby Silver’s rebounds helped the keep the Eagles in the game until the end.

Junkyard Dogs 34, Dunkeys 19: Nick Lotrecchiano was high scorer for the Dogs with 10 points. Joey Carrino dropped in 5 points and Charlie Huegi contributed 6 points and 6 assists to the Dogs fast break offense. Carrino, Forest Speed and Kyle McGrath led the gritty Dog defense with their aggressive, hustling style. For the Dunkeys, Peter Manfredonia had 6 points and Mason Galanis and Danny Romeo played great defense.

Heat 39, Gators 28: Erik Street and Will Swain scored 8 points apiece for the Heat. Colin Reilly added 7 points and 5 assists, while Brad Kretz and Sean McCafferty played strong all around games. Bryce “Big Man” Decker led the Gators with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Brian Raab dished out 5 assists and scored 6. Jason Ferrari scored 8, and played a very good defensive game. Matt Hess and Mitchell Godin also played strong defense.

Celtics 41, Semi-Pros 28: The Celtics got back on the winning track against the ever tough Semi-Pros. Leading the C’s offense was Danny “The General” Colucci, who when not dishing out assists to his teammates was sticking 17-foot jumpers while coming off screens. John “The Wall” Narducci, who’s known for his side splitting picks on offense, also stepped up and led the C’s defense with multiple steals and his trapping defense against the larger opponent. C.J. “D-town” Dunn, Andrew “End-to-End” Cragin and “The General” each had 8 points in the Celtic’s victory. Harry DePuy played a tremendous overall game for the Semi-Pros scoring 8 points, pulling down 12 rebounds dishing out 5 assists and making 4 steals. James Burdette was high scorer dropping in 12 points and Jimmy Widmann made a key basket in the Semi Pros comeback attempt. Michael Unschuld was all over the court on defense, pulling down 5 rebounds and making several excellent defensive plays.

Screaming Eagles 37, Dragons 27: Jaret DeVellis got the Eagles off to a fast start with 8 first quarter points. Shane Quimby and Christian Hoffman played lockdown defense allowing the Screamers to build an early lead. Will Dalton, filling in at point guard, did a great job distributing the ball for 5 assists. Chris Hartley owned the glass and set solid picks for hot shooting Bobby “Quick” Silver, who finished with 4 points. David Matthews and Deegan Beauchman combined for 13 points in this tough fought battle. Rory Phillips played great man defense while Tommy Rahr led the team with 5 rebounds. Colton Moroney was the unsung hero for the Dragons getting it done on both ends of the court.

Grade 4 Bantam Boys

Green Rockets 21, Wizards 14: Green Rockets were led by Alex Dunleavey with 10 points. Connery Mayer had 4 assists, Matthew Frazzetta had 6 steals and William Lemay had 6 rebounds. Thomas Cotton had 6 points for the Wizards. Zach Anderson had 2 assists, Stephen Moccio had 3 steals and R.H. Clark had 10 boards.

 Gladiators 29, Orange Fire 16: Matt Bucci had 14 points for the Gladiators, and Austin Engler had 6 assists. Will Gottschalck had 5 steals, and Jack Palermo had 5 boards. Orange Fire was led by Matt Kretz 6 points. Colby Olsen had 3 assists. Thomas Stanczyk had 2 steals and Jack Lavelle had 5 boards.

Flaming Monkeys, 21 Huskies 18: Graham Dowd had 10 points for the Monkeys while Andrew Janco had 3 assists, Greg Trimarchi was all over the ball with 4 steals and Quinn Hart had 7 rebounds. Owen McInerny had 10 points for the Huskies, while Bryce Griffin had 3 assists, Tim Cervera played an outstanding defensive game.

Men-in-Black, 18 Red Devils 9: Men-in-Black were led by Jacob Steinebrey with 10 points and Will Whitlock, 4 points. Devon Covert had an outstanding all-around game. Chad Azzarito excelled on defense and Mitchell Long had 12 boards. The Red Devils were led by Nick Lametto with 3 points, Will Huegi led the way on defense and Austin Kasbarian had 10 rebounds.

Jr Boys

Bullets 39, Wildcats 35: For the Bullets, Chris Devaney was the high scorer, Chris Carroll was the assist leader, Tyler Gibney the defensive star and Jim Leidlein the rebound leader. For the Wildcats, Wyatt Dupuy was the high scorer with 15 points, Virgil Procaccini had 10 points, Mitchell Girgasty had 6 rebounds and Matt Barra led the defense.

Heat 52, Trashtalkers 51: For the Heat, Justin DeVellis was the high scorer with 19 points and added 11 rebounds. Colton Sparta had 11 points. Spencer Brindley had 4 assists, Ryan Errico had 4 steals, and Ruhit Ahsan had 7 points and 4 assists. For the Trashtalkers, Jamie MacDonald was the high scorer with 13 points. Max Hayes was the assist leader, Pat Afryie had 4 steals and Brandon Marks had 11 rebounds. 

Knicks 41, Running Rebels 39: Patrick Riccardi was the high scorer with 21 points to lead the Knicks. Robbie Hughes was the defensive star and Matt White was the rebound leader. Robbie Hughes and Patrick Riccardi each came up with steals and scored in the final 13 seconds to pull out the win. For the Running Rebels, Drew Sullivan was the high scorer with 12 points. Christian Mather had 8 points and 3 assists. Doug Miller had 4 steals and Mike Senf had 12 rebounds.

Huskies 52, Celtics 38: For the Huskies, Patt Mullins was the high scorer with 20 points. Dean Demers was the assist leader, Grant Ricketts had 7 steals and Jeff Peterson was the rebound leader. Jeff Hoffman scored 8 points. For the Celtics, Camaron McLeary was the point leader with 12, Matt Lindell had 10 points, Andrew Ryan was the rebound leader, and Danny Cummings, Greg LaDestro and Troy Larsen played great defense.

Gators 41, Grizzlies 26: For the Gators, Stephen Conway was the high scorer with 11 points. Wes Morlock had 4 assists, Owen Gaston 3 steals and Sean Reilly had 5 rebounds. Harry Snellback had 5 points.For the Grizzlies, Garrison Buzzanca and Tommy Catalina were the high scorers with 8 points each. Ty Runkel was the assist leader, Hunter Low had 3 steals, Max Lopez had 6 rebounds and JP Kitzmiller had 5 blocks.

Nets 37, The Team 36: For the Nets, Nicky Sajovic was the high scorer with 17 points. Angel Santos had 8 points. David Cartisano had 4 steals and Angel Santos had 10 rebounds. For The Team, Tom Gleason was the high scorer with 12 points, Joe Davis had 4 assists, and Jack Kearney and Zach Bergeron played good defense.

Nighthawks 44, Tarheels 32: Mike Scharfenberg was the high scorer with 24 points in the win. Matt Wood had 4 assists, Miles LoBuglio was the defensive star and Brock Chimileski had 7 points and 8 rebounds.  Dan Winn and Mike Burton played strong defense. For the Tarheels, Matt Rahtelli was the high scorer with 8 points. Stephen Rahr had 3 assists, Brenton Scott had 5 steals and Steve Anderau had 5 rebounds.

Bricklayers 66, Warriors 48: For the Bricklayers, Jonah Muniz was the high scorer with 27. Jack Champagne had 13 points, Phil Reynolds had 10 assists and Charlie Helgren had 8 steals. For the Warriors, Eric Fiore was the high scorer with 27 points. Brandon Cooper had 12 points, Chris Otero had 5 assists, Pat Pierce had 5 steals and Colin Post had 8 rebounds. Ryan Pisani played great defense.

Huskies 67, Heat 58: For the Huskies, Pat Mullins was the high scorer with 44 points. Thomas Primavera had 7 points. Grant Ricketts had 11 assists, Jack Lago had 6 steals and Dean Demers had 8 rebounds. For the Heat, Justin Devellis was the high scorer with 40 points. Colton Spasta had 11 points, Spencer Brindley had 4 assists, Ryan Rosenberger had 3 steals and Pat Carello played well on defense.

Nighthawks 57, Gators 38: For the Nighthawks, Mike Scharfenberg was the high scorer with 35 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Dan Winn had 2 steals. Same Adams and Matt Spencer sparked the defense and Brock Chimileski scored 8 key points. Matt Wood and Mike Burton both had 4 points. For the Gators, Alec Beauchemin was the high scorer with 10 points. Wes Morlock had 8 points, Stephen Conway had 3 assists, Owen Gaston had 3 steals and Austin Hubbert had 5 rebounds.

Running Rebels 47, Wildcats 43: For the Running Rebels, Christian Mather was the high scorer with 18 points. Riley Cross had 11 assists, Drew Sullivan had 4 steals and Mike Senf had 13 rebounds. For the Wildcats, Wyatt Dupuy was the high scorer with 17 points. Virgil Procaccini had 11 points, Justin Cherry had 10 rebounds and Brendan Callery led the defense.

The Team 42, Bullets 39: For The Team, Kaleb Rowe had 3 assists and Greg Horne had 4 steals. Steven Walsh led the offense with 13 points. Chris Erickson and Tom Gleason played aggressive defense. For the Bullets, Chris Devaney ws the high scorer with 11 points. Austin Babyak had 12 assists and Mike Dinelli had 7 rebounds.

Midget Boys

Gray Bullets vs Wizards: For Gray Bullets, Tanner Stergue, Jim Davies and Nickolas Accousti played well on offense. Marc Carlson, Ryan Escoda and McKinley Seaver played great on defense. For the Wizards, Adam Bergeron, Dylan Champagne and Jake Holman led the way on offense, while Trevor Palmer, Cameron Champagne and Tommy Murray excelled on defense.

Yellow Bananas vs Blue Knights: For the Blue Knights, Harry Eppers, James Hobar and Liam Murphy led the offense. Keenan Murphy, Wyatt Moyers and Ben Nowacki were strong on defense. For the Yellow Bananas, Shane Powers, Forest Anderson and Ryan Kost were outstanding on offense. Harvey Long, Ayden Kasbarian and Gregory Brisette were strong on defense.

Blue Falcons vs Huskies: For the Blue Falcons, Matt Principi, Jacob Muller and Wesley Scriven were dominant on offense. Defensively Brennan Mayer, Bobby Ward and James Doyle led the way. For the Huskies, Andrew Deluca, Luke Fischer and Matt Gerbo were good on offense. Timothy Davis, Jacob Duffy and Paul Samberg played great on defense.

Gladiators vs Slammers: For the Gladiators, Jack Swanson, Cole Demirgian and Trevor Bottom played great on offense. Faris Kaghat, Shane Maksel and Tristan Crone played terrific defense. For the Slammers, Jack Bittman, Kyle Duval and Brandon Giglio scored on offense. Matthew Jaeger, Ian Klepacki and Connor Legault excelled on defense.

White Hawks vs Red Rockets: For the White Hawks, Connor Dinallo, Jack Miller and Owen Walsh controlled the offense. Ari  Schwartz, Timmy McCarthy and Derrick Lewis were great on defense. For the Red Rockets, Adam Wolff, Aidan Ford and Jack Dooley played well on offense. Thomas Luciano, Dwyer Grimes and Thomas Briscoe played great on defense.

Gators vs Ghostbusters: For the Gators, Thomas Hartley, Silas Decker, Shane Demers and Josh Harper played very well on  offense. Brendan O’Hara, James Schumacher, Eric Moore and Nick Harper all played well on defense. For the Ghostbusters, Dylan Sock, Mark Hall and Colby Fowler played great on offense. David Kohler, Andres Sokk and Jacob Clements played terrific on defense.

Orange Crush vs Knicks: For the Crush, Jack Hannan, Rob Disibio and Brian Montoya scored for the offense. CJ Trivers, Jake Pirone and Garrett Norberg were strong on defense. For the Knicks, Michael Annseley, Ryan Williams and Taylor Clark-Pavio led the way on offense. William Stenz, Jared Tod and Trevor Tyrell were strong on defense.

Green Sharks vs Blue Devils: For the Sharks, Owen Rahr, Jack Vaughan and Ben Terry played great on offense. Ryan Mailloux, Jack Buchler and Evan Eggleston were great on defense. For the Devils, Luke Barrett, Jacob Laros, Andy Greenwood and James Clifford played great offense. Ethan Aug, Layton Harrell, Brain VanderHave and Adam Farley played strong defense.

 

Grade 5 Girls Travel

Newtown 28, New Canaan 9: A great offensive effort by Lauren Wilcox, Alana Murray and Katie Laaksonen and strong defense provided by Kelly Merrick, Katie Mossbarger and Caitlin Linden led the team to a decisive victory.

Newtown 26, Westport 9: Casey Harkins was the high scorer and Haley Ryan led in assists while Maren Brady and Lindsay Hoyt provided stifling defense to secure a win.

Midget Girls

Blue Storm vs Chili Peppers: For the Storm, Ashley Solomon and Katie McCabe led the offense while Elizabeth Weisgerber and Sophie Muzzio led the defense. For the Peppers, Jenna Lavelle and Rylee Mulligan led the offense while Allison Kelleher and Haley Harkins led the defense.

Purple People Eaters vs Dynamites: For Purple, Beth Savinelli and Tess Davenport led the offense while Sarah Lindell and Larkin Huffman led the defense. For the Dynamites, Rebecca Gavel and Ava Petrellese led the O and Jordan Williams and Catherine Shaw led the D.

Junior Mints vs Lightning: For the Mints, Carli Carpenter and Vanessa Tucker led the offense while Nicki Dapra and Jemma Petit led the defense. For the Lightning, Julia Bashak and Cary Mangold led the offense while Sarah Widman and Sarah Dowling led the defense.

Yellow Jackets vs Cheese Doodles: For Yellow, Alexis Mason and Julia Haskins led the offense while Emilia Guineess and Emily Krasnickas led the defense. For the Doodles, Rachel Tomasino and Isabella Frnchie led the offense while Sonia Ahmaripour and Kira Smith led the defense.

Cheese Doodles vs Chili Peppers: For the Doodles, Kira Smith and Rachel Tomasino led the offense while Sienna Cummings and Evelynn Schuertly led the defense. For the Peppers, Kim Buttery and Catherine Rizk led the offense while Jenna Carvahlo and Teresa Forlenzo led the defense.

Purple People Eaters vs Junior Mints: For Purple, Beth Savinelli and Larkin Huffman led the offense while Alexandra Futterman and Theresa Davenport led the defense. For the Mints, Carli Carpenter and Danni Otero led the offense while Lauren Arkens and Vanness Tucker led the defense.

Lightning Blue vs Yellow Jackets: For the Lightning, Lauren Adams and Sarah Dowling led the offense while Savannah LaFerriere and Lauren Montague led the defense. For Yellow, Alexis Mason and Julia Haskins led the offense while Jackie Gouveia and Emily led the defense.

Blue Storm vs Dynamites: For the Storm, Gracie Pettinelli and Shannon Cheh led the offense while Ashley Solomon and Katie McCabe led the defense. For the Dynamites, Catherine Shaw and Olivia Brosnan led the offense while Jordan Williams and Sarah Brittin led the defense.
