Patricia McWhirt
Nurse, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother
Thomaston — Patricia “Pat” M. McWhirt, 84, passed away Wednesday, June 1, 2022, at VITAS Inpatient Hospice Unit at St Mary’s Hospital. Born October 14, 1937, to the late Ralph and Dorothy (Sackett) McConchie, she was the older of two daughters. Patricia was happily married to the late David E. McWhirt for nearly 60 years, the two of them enjoyed their lives together with their family.
Patricia was a proud graduate of the Methodist School of Nursing in Brooklyn, N.Y. Pat used the flexibility of her nursing career to allow her time with her young family, initially working in the hospital evenings and weekends, to being a school nurse. Once her children were older and in school all day, Pat furthered her education in occupational healthcare. Her career allowed for many years at Perkin-Elmer in Norwalk and Wilton, Hughes Electronics in Danbury, and others. Pat finished her career in nursing helping the Pomperaug Health District with annual flu shots.
No matter where Pat was living, she was involved. Pat and Dave raised their family in Newtown before moving to Bethlehem, Woodbury, and finally Thomaston. When in Newtown her involvement started with the Jaycees and Garden Club. Her involvement changed as her children grew, thus spending many hours devoted to the Newtown High School Band Parents Association, whether it was working at the concession stand or serving as a chaperone for the band trips to Europe. Pat and Dave were active parishioners and served in leadership roles at both the Newtown and Woodbury United Methodist Church, as well as singing in the choir.
Pat had many interests and skills that she shared with others. She loved to bake and would shower her family and friends with baked goods at the holidays. She was quick to deliver a meal or loaf of homemade bread to a friend in need. Her knitting projects were treasured by all that received them. With a focus on family, Pat and Dave enjoyed many a family trip, first with their children and then their grandchildren, whether it was camping, the beach, Myrtle Beach, Walt Disney World, or Bantam Lake.
Pat is survived by her three children: Karen McWhirt and her husband Robert, Kathryn D’Alessandro and her husband Geoffrey, and Scott McWhirt and his wife Rhonda. Additionally, she is survived by her six grandchildren: Emily Fitzpatrick and her husband Ryan, Eric Pattison and his wife Caitlin, Claire and Colette D’Alessandro, and Brian and Gabrielle McWhirt; and two great-grandchildren: Eloise and Andrew Fitzpatrick. She also leaves her sister, Olive McConchie, as well as other family members and friends to cherish her memory.
Calling hours will be Friday, June 24, from 4 to 6 pm at Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home, 2 School Street, Woodbury, Conn. A service celebrating her life will be on Saturday, June 25, at 10:30 am at Munson-Lovetere Funeral Home, Woodbury. Her burial will be private amongst her immediate family.
