Results From The Soccer Pitch
Youth soccer action, for the girls and the boys, continued this week with travel and recreation games for various ages in and out of town. Game highlights are as follows:
Girls
U8
Mustangs 3, Great White Sharks 2: For the Mustangs, Veronica Vodola scored 2 and Karsen Pirone scored 1 goal. Kaitlyn King and Holly Ankers had assists. Claire Dubois was outstanding on defense and in goal. For the Great White Sharks, Julianna Russo and Brooke Antous scored goals. Kristina Goeree played well in goal. Madelin Hossler was tough on defense. Hannah Daly played a great all around game.
Mustangs 1, The Fighting Irish 3: For the Mustangs, Angela Vodola scored the goal off an assist from Angela Carriero. Natilie Barden and Cailin Blessey were solid on defense. Kiersten Fallon and Julia Clark controlled the midfield. For the Fighting Irish, Alison Kelleher, Keeley Kortze and Jenna Lavelle all scored. Emma Stierle played well on defense.
Wildcats 4, Tornadoes 1: The Wildcats were led on offense by Jacquelyn Matthews who netted 3 goals and Kaley Meisenheimer who added another goal. Hannah Groonell and Liza Gentrup both played a strong all around game, while Zoe Bogan and Olivia Elkins anchored a strong defense. Aniko Walsh scored the lone goal for the Tornadoes with an assist by Kristen Cirone. Eirenie Athanasoulis, Mary Celentano and Elizabeth Salley played solid games despite the loss.
The Fighting Eagles 2, Shooting Stars 0: The Shooting Stars were led on the field by Jenna Gonski and Madison Zippersteinâs solid play in the midfield. Sage Karp and Izzy Mawdsley kept the ball moving for the Stars. The Fighting Eaglesâ goals were scored by Katie Sailer and Simone Paradis. Ciera Jaehn, Nicole DaPra and Ahley Marron all made excellent debuts for the Eagles as they were able to move the ball well during the game.
U10
Extreme Mustangs 6, Dynamite Desserts 1: Alex Fatterman and Jillian Pieretti scored goals and Vanessa Tucker shined on defense for the Extreme. Olivia Butler had a second half goal which was assisted by Julia Haskins. Lucy Draper played instinctively in her first soccer game.
Dominators 2, American Eagles 1: Natalie Shaker and Caroline Condon each assisted and scored for the Dominators while Kiera Smith and Molly Ma played strong on defense. Sarah Simonson also played well on offense. Olivia Hage scored for the American Eagles, and Grace Sholtes and Maya Neuhoff played outstanding all-around games. Jillian Milano made several terrific saves in goal, while Kaysie Fisher and Natalie Young anchored the teamâs strong defensive efforts.
Wolverines 1, Animals 1: In a great battle, Haley Harkins scored the Animalâs only goal. Janyce Toth had 4 saves in goal. Danni Otero was stingy on defense while Allie Rezcek was strong at midfield. The Wolverinesâ lone goal was scored by Sarah MacMullen. Katelyn Henchcliffe played tough in goal in the second half. Jenna Enhot and Sophia Andrew brought an impressive overall effort to the midfield.
Newtown Breeze 4, Monroe Green 1: Newtown got off to a quick start against Monroe with an early goal from Natalie Kelchner set up by a kick from Ashley Santore. Rylee Mulligan and Maggie Beardsley each added a goal to make it 3-0 at the half. Cecilia Schoeni added the fourth goal in the second half before Monroe scored off of a penalty kick. Mary Hufziger and Erin Tressler helped spark the offense while Savannah Mather was solid on defense and in goal.
U11
Newtown 6, New Canaan 1: Goals were scored by Lucy Helgren, Cameron Cicarelli (assist by Maddy Pirone), Marissa Thill, Olivia Hamula and Makenna Cerney who had two. Nevin Gattey played well on offense. Megan Kelleher, Grace Sandercox, Olivia Kaplan, Meghan Doyle and Lauren Beier played excellent defense. Keepers Amanda Wikramanayake and Caitlyn Linden held New Canaan to just a goal.
Newtown Thunder 8, Bethel 2: Makenna Cerney, Caitlyn Linden and Lucy Helgren each scored twice to lead the Thunder offense. Cam Cicarelli and Nevan Gattey added goals. The Thunderâs strong passing and team play kept the pressure on Bethel. Grace Sandercox, Megan Kelleher and Olivia Caplan made some outstanding defensive plays in front of goalkeepers Laruen Beier and Olivia Hamula to cap the win.
Newtown Thunder 2 Monroe 2: Keepers Grace Sandercox and Kendra Dunnigan made some great saves. Leading the defense were Lauren Beier and Meghan Doyle. Strong in the midfield were Lucy Helgren, Caitlyn Linden and Marissa Thill. Goals were scored by Makenna Cerney and Nevan Gattey.
U12
Newtown Comets 3, Bethel 0: The Comets scored early with Michaela Kuligowski setting up Quinn Karp. Kim Brello took a hard shot and the rebound deflected to Anna Biondi who kicked the ball in for a score. Brittany Antous scored the third goal. Veronica Moyer was strong on offense. Sarah Lyons, Christina Debartolomeo and Victoria Kirkman held the opponent at bay with an aggressive defense.
U13
Lightning 2, Stamford 1: Amy Martinelli scored both goals and delivered strong play throughout the game. Sydney Allen and Meg Korchman played well on defense and Raquel Crespo played well in the midfield. Kate Fallon and Jesse Sailer showed no fear in the nets. Â

Twisters 5, No Names 0: For the Twisters, Kerry Scallon scored three goals and Caitlin Filiato and Bella Saraceni both scored. Strong defense by Anita Luxkaranayagam and Nicole Mendonca and solid goaltending by Jenna Hansen led the way. For the No Names, Maren Brady, Hannah Della and Mackenzie Lapp played a strong defensive game, Lindsay Fuori and Tessa Leon-Gambetta played well on offense. Ashley Marks had a strong game in goal in the second half.
Twisters 3, Earthquakes 0: For the Twisters, goals were scored by Caitlin Filiato, Kerry Scallon and Alexis Tucker. Strong midfield play by Mary Kate Malin. Tight defense by Bonnie Buchetto and Anna Pickney. Solid goaltending by Aofie Flanagan. Though the Earthquakes were scoreless, the team as a whole stepped up their game this week. Kelly Coughlin, Hannah Booth and Makenzie Casey all had strong all-around games.
Chatterboxes 4, Earthquakes 0: For the Chatterboxes, Sierra Mather scored twice and Meghan and Emily Grimes had a goal each. Meghan had multiple assists and Amanda Donovan had an assist. Strong play came from Hannah Grant and Christina Moore and Brianna Baranoski was solid in goal. For the Earthquakes, solid performances were turned in by Hannah Booth, Becky Frank and Emily Turco. Jessie Coughlin had a solid game in goal.

U8
Little Roma 3, Team Ten 1: Mark Leonardi scored all 3 goals for Little Roma. Justin Jarvis, Ethan Hanna, and Ethan Correia each played well in the goal.
U10
Bethel 1, Newtown 0: John Finnegan and James Barden had a solid day on offense. Danny Arneth had a great day on defense while Jack Vaughan was on top of his game in goal.
Newtown 0, Norwalk 0: Tyler Trede did a nice job moving the ball up the field. Aidan Ford drove to the goal. Henry Petrillo kept pressure on Norwalkâs goalie. Christian Adam cleared the ball with precision.
Team One 7, Newtown Predators 4: All four goals scored by Kevin Arther. Ethan Cox and Ryan Escoda were strong on offense. Defensive standouts were Michael Arther, Chris Russo, Austin Smith and Sterling Radasci. David Usher put in a strong all-around game.
Net Rippers 6, Trumbull 3: The speedy Matt Bucc-Bucci netted an impressive four goals for the Net Rippers, while Brendan OâHara and Evan Eggleston each ripped in one of their own. Ryan Brello, Mark Hall and Silas Decker, in goal, played well. Midfielders Evan Eggleston and the Harper brothers Nick and Josh moved the ball with missile-like precision, while Andy Greenwood and Connor Barrett were essential in the win.
Strikers 3, Team Six 3: Jack McDonnell got the Strikers back in the game with a goal late in the first half on an assist from Robert DiSibio. RH Clark then had two goals in the second half, one assisted by Andrew Janco and the other by Robert DiSibio. Ryan Horn and Dennis Timmons were strong in goal. For Team Six, goals were scored by Thomas Skrelja, Dylan Sock and Owen Rahr. Wally Skrelja, Nate Sanchez and Jackson Dooley were strong on defense.
U11
Norwalk 2, Newtown Spartans 1: Strong offensive performances by Zach Van De Weerdt, Luke Caplan and Andrey Masser generated lots of shots on net. Theodore Silverman put the Spartans on the scoreboard with a goal early in the second half. After falling behind 2-0, the Spartans rallied with the whole team playing aggressively on both ends of the field. Justin Cicarelli and Felix Summ controlled the midfield and made some great passes. Strong defensive performances from Matt Guinee and Jack Lavelle helped shut down the Wilton strikers.
U12
Newtown Strikers 6, Fairfield USA White 2: Newtown improved to 2-0 in the conference with a win over Fairfield. The Strikersâ offense was led by Spencer Tolson, who had three goals, along with Cole Rogalin, Josh Houle and Blake Jarvis. Kevin Finnegan was solid in goal and Liam McNichols was a standout on defense for Newtown.
U14
The AC Falcons 6, Roma 3: Goal scorers for the AC Falcons were Joshua Harrison, (1), Johnny Bienkowski (1), Mark Urso (2) and Chris Rovelli (2). Kyle Watkins and Zachary Weiland, who stopped a couple of penalty kicks, were solid in goal. David Csordas, Christopher Horkachuck and Christopher Buckley played well in the midfield, recovering and pressuring throughout the game. For Roma, the goal scorers were Tony Leonardi (2) and Dillon Palumbo (1). Daniel Colucci and Nick Nicholas were strong in goal.
Hot Pockets 4, Slammin Cobras 1: Brad Kretz scored for the Slammin Cobras, George Ferris and Mike Stierle each did a great job in goal and David Pierce played excellent defense. Scoring for the Hot Pockets were Tim Kelly with two, and Ian Lew and Carter Nordman. Chris Anesi did a great job as goalie for the Hot Pockets, and Tyler Dullinger was excellent on defense.
