Congratulations To Wes Johnson

To the Editor:

I was thrilled to see that Mr Wes Johnson was selected for the district’s Profiles in Professionalism award. I can think of no one more deserving. It has pained me to witness some of what Mr Johnson has had to endure in taking on this challenging position and promoting the initiatives set by the previous Board of Education.

At a recent meeting, it was disheartening to see board member Don Ramsey inappropriately criticize Mr Johnson’s work and the members of the community who have supported him. Mr Ramsey specifically referred to DEI work and supporters as “divisive and threatening.” Mr Ramsey did not immediately stop even when asked to by the board chair.

To his credit, Mr Johnson did not react to such abhorrent behavior and calmly waited to share the excellent work he has been doing.

I have personally witnessed Mr Johnson in attendance at many such meetings and community events and am always impressed with his deep understanding, patience, and professional decorum. I am grateful that Newtown students have such a role model.

We must embrace the opportunity to move forward under the guidance of Mr Wes Johnson. I truly encourage all members of our community to support this truly exemplary employee and to work toward coming together in support of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Respectfully,

Christine E. Miller
