Crushing Warriors 3, Tigers 1: The Crushing Warriors and the Tigers squared off in a well-played, energetic contest. Elise Barricelli again got the scoring started for the Crushing Warriors by knocking home the first goal. Isabella Gerace displayed tremendous skill and determination to tally the next goal, followed by a persistent effort from Alexis Woods to find the back of the net. The Tigers roared back with a fine goal by Jessica D’ Amico, aided by relentless efforts on offense from birthday girl Julia Cirone and Kayleigh Troy. The Crushing Warriors used a solid defensive effort led by Eva Barricelli, Jillian Bobowick and Alyssa Jones to thwart further Tiger attacks. The Crushing Warriors offense then mounted their own attack with Emily Dunford and Maggie Breault making several charges and shots on goal. Katie Larson and Elena Sughrue, however, anchored a strong defense for the Tigers, who also got great goal play from Tessa Bigwarfe.

U10

Newtown’s U10 girls Net Rippers had a good showing at the Columbus Day Jamboree hosted by the New Milford Soccer Club, ending the day with a 1-1-2 record. Game highlights:

Net Rippers 0, Middlebury 0: The Net Rippers opened the tournament with a scoreless tie. Charlotte Branchflower and Olivia Buchler pressed hard on offense, and Carlie Smith and Gabriella Sadowski gave strong midfield support. Newtown played shutdown defense throughout the contest, with excellent contributions from Mary Sortino, Morgan Seras, Sophia Bajcer, Paige Farley and Gwen Drew. Jane Shearin played well in goal.

Fairfield Hot Shots 1, Net Rippers 0: Morgan Seras had an outstanding game in goal, showing fearless play and making several key saves against an aggressive Fairfield team. Olivia Cornett and Mary Sortino kept up the offensive pressure, while Carlie Smith and Paige Farley anchored the defense.

Net Rippers 0, Greenwich Shoreline Academy 0: The third game of the tournament ended in another scoreless draw. Olivia Buchler, Charlotte Branchflower and Jane Shearin helped lead the attack on goal, while Madeline Patrick showed good footwork in the midfield. Carlie Smith and Sophia Bajcer played tough on defense, backed up by Jillian Carrino in the nets.

Net Rippers 3, New Milford Hurricanes 1: The Net Rippers capped off the tournament with a decisive victory over New Milford. Madeline Patrick jump-started the game as she put in the first goal for Newtown. Gabriella Sadowski followed with goal number two on a breakaway run, using smart play to convert the shot on a rebound after her first effort was deflected by the goalie. Gwen Drew helped keep up the pace with a good attack on offense. Paige Farley scored the final goal for Newtown, chipping it in from the left after smoothly ducking under a New Milford defender. Olivia Cornett was solid in goal, and Jillian Carrino had a good all-around game.

Thunderbolts 1, Lighting Strikes 0: For the Thunderbolts, Shea Murphy played terrific in goal in the first half and then made some great plays in the second half at offense. Kim Johnson scored a terrific goal to put the Thunderbolts up 1-0. The defense was led by Carla Fabrizio who played very aggressively. Abby Grenier made some tremendous saves in the second half. For the Lighting Strikes, Katie Viselli, Anna Romano and Gabriella Mogollon pressured the Thunderbolt net multiple times during the contest. Holly Ankers played extremely well at the sweeper position effectively shutting down a tough opponent during the first half of the game. The Lighting net was again defended by stellar play of Meghan Chipman and Alyssa Bailey, both of whom exhibited excellent ball handling skills in their respective halves in net.

Boys

U8

Newtown Ninjas 4, Thunderbolts 1: The Ninjas came out on top of a highly competitive physical game with both teams battling hard for the win despite the rain and mud. The Ninjas constantly pressurized the Thunderbolt’s defense, pouncing on every loose ball in the goal area and made the most of their chances. Benen Blessey scored 3 in quick succession and Quinn McDougall grabbed the fourth to put the Ninjas 4-0 ahead. The Thunderbolts showed huge resolve and determination to respond, playing better than the score line suggested. Timmy Galer and Nate Taylor were both superb in goal, and Eitan Halevi was imperious at midfield. Their persistence finally paid off when Sam Ankers broke through with a powerful counter-attacking run. He split the Ninja’s defense with a great through-ball to find the ever-dangerous Johnny Moxham in open space, and Moxham slotted home a goal to make it 4-1 in the final few seconds of play, giving the Thunderbolts some consolation for their efforts.

 

 

U10

Space Warhals 3, Flamethrowers 0: Nick Hobar and Evan Booth stopped many shots in goal for the Flamethrowers while Ryan Stutman and Logan McAloon cleared away numerous shots from their fullback positions. The Flamethrower offense was led by the aggressive play of forwards Avar Deepak, Jake Mailloux and Miller Tetreault who led numerous second half surges.

U12

Newtown Lightning second in Rocky Hill Columbus Day Tournament.

The first game against the South Windsor Bobcats opened with a goal by Newtown’s Alex Hagischi. Sean Connor scored two goals in a row and Ty Dickinson added a fourth goal before the halftime whistle. Brian Montoya and Garrett Mandarano were strong players in the backfield. The final score was 4-0 with Thomas Hartley in the goalie box.

The second game was against the home team Rocky Hill Sharks. In the first half, the Sharks #5 scored three goals with an assist from #21 for each goal. Several Rocky Hill players left at halftime to play in another tournament. After the half, the match was a stalemate and the final score was 3-0.

Newtown’s third game against the Wethersfield Killer Bees’  Miles Martiska scored during the last ten minutes of this rainy contest. Ty Dickinson scored the final goal with an assist from Sean Connor. Thomas Briscoe and Jackson Dooley’s midfield skills helped Newtown achieve the 2-0 win.

For the championship game, Lightning once again faced the Rocky Hill Sharks. Declain Sughrue’s strong defensive skills and Travis Huzina in the sweeper position kept the Sharks at bay in this aggressive contest. Issac Silverman and Brian Montoya’s kicking skills and Alex Delp’s headers kept the pressure on against the Sharks. Newtown’s strikers made several attempts to score, but the Rocky Hill goalie was impressive. In the last 30 seconds of the game, the Sharks scored.
