Members of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company and Newtown Hook & Ladder Volunteer Fire Company are joined by Mike McCarthy and employees of Applied Rescue Technique on the shoreline of Lake Zoar on Sunday, February 27. The local firefighters began the morning doing a quick class at Hook & Ladder’s firehouse, before heading to the ice-covered waters of the local lake, where they continued ice rescue training. McCarthy, who is also a member of Hook & Ladder, is also the owner of the Sandy Hook-based technical rescue training company that led the combined training session for the two local fire companies. —Karin Halstead/Sandy Hook VFR photo
