The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) has two events approaching, including the golden anniversary of one of its spring exhibitions.

On Wednesday, March 23, SCAN will host Karen Israel painting a landscape with water reflections in pastel. Israel will be at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street, for a program scheduled to begin at 1:30 pm.

The demonstration is open to the public, free of charge. It will be presented in the lower level of the meeting house.

Those planning to attend should note that the program is open only to fully vaccinated individuals.

Karen Israel’s pastel paintings are defined by their dynamic compositions and unique viewpoints. She is influenced by the light and mood of the subject and lets those elements dictate her approach. These subjects are rendered with a strong appreciation for the rigors of formal design coupled with a fearless array of color choices.

Israel currently teaches classes and workshops in pastel and gives instructional demos in pastel for arts organizations.

Her work has been featured on the websites of Artsy Shark and Dutch Art Box, and in the art journals Practique des Arts, Pastel Journal, and Southwest Art Magazine.

Israel’s work has also won numerous awards in national and international juried exhibits. Five of her artworks will be included in the “Pastels of the World in Bourbonnais International Exhibition” in Montluçon, France, this year.

Israel has exhibited locally in “A Century of Connecticut Art” by New Haven Paint and Clay Club, Lyman Allyn Museum; and “Capturing Life and Beauty: Women Artists of the New Haven Paint and Clay Club,” New Haven Museum.

Reservations are not available for SCAN programs but additional information may be available at SCANart.org.
