Hockey Team Ties Wave, Supports Collin George Whitmore Foundation
The Newtown-New Fairfield co-op hockey team skated to a 4-4 with New Milford, at Danbury Ice Arena, on February 12. The Nighthawks were shut out 4-0 by the Green Wave early in the season and appeared headed to victory until the Wave scored with just 1 second remaining to force OT.
James Celentano scored his 40th and 41st career goals, putting him in an elite group of players to reach that scoring mark, and goaltender Markus Paltauf faced 50 shots and put in a stellar performance to keep things tied. Paltauf added to his NHS record 2,000-plus saves.
Cam Gouveia was set up by Eddie Faircloth and Wiley Harris was assisted by Ashton Albert for two of the NHS-NF goals. Celentano was assisted by Quinn Harris and Paltauf on one of his tallies and Gouveia on the other.
The players sported tribute jerseys in honor of Collin George Whitmore, who passed away suddenly in 2016 at the age of 8 from a condition known as Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM). The Newtown hockey program, throughout the years, has supported the Collin George Whitmore Foundation, founded in an effort to raise awareness of AVM, provide financial support for AVM research, and to provide financial aid to individuals in order to participate in youth hockey and golf programs.
