Fender Bender At Plaza

Newtown Police report Sheryl Lowman, 65, of Monroe, operating a 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport ES, was attempting to turn left into a parking space at 228 South Main Street, in the area of Stop & Shop, at 2:02 pm January 26. The space was located between an unoccupied 2013 Kia Soul owned by Michele Casson of Newtown and an uninvolved vehicle.

While pulling into the spot, Lowman’s vehicle made contact with the driver’s side rear bumper and fender area of Casson’s vehicle.

There was minor damage to both vehicles. No injuries were reported.

Jeep Hit House

Newtown Police report Julie Barbeau, 55, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limit, was pulling into a driveway on Rock Ridge Road at 12:41 pm January 30.

Barbeau noticed she was at the wrong address and backed up out of the driveway to leave. While backing up the driveway, her passenger side tires left the cleared portion of the driveway and went into a snow pile at the top of the driveway. Barbeau said her vehicle began to slide down the driveway, ultimately striking the house in the front rear corner near the garage.

There was damage to both the home and the vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident was on private property.

Struck While Backing Out

Newtown Police report Angela Lewis, 78, of Newtown, operating a 2018 Chevrolet Trax, was backing up from a parking space on South Main Street at 4:28 pm January 31. While backing out, Lewis backed into a 2016 Chevrolet K1500 Suburban operated by Marin Strout, 35, of Newtown, which was parked in another parking space.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Disorderly Conduct

Newtown Police report Trevor Esten, 55, of Woodbury, was arrested at 5:49 pm February 1 on the charge of disorderly conduct. Esten was released on a promise to appear with a court date the next day.

Ran Off Road

Newtown Police report Bailey Prestera, 16, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2001 Lincoln LS, was traveling south on Johnnie Appleseed Drive at 8:26 pm February 2. While negotiating a sharp curve to the left, Prestera drove off the roadway and onto a private property.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Prestera was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

18-Wheeler Through Guardrail

Connecticut State Police report Maurice Soldrich, 31, of Sellersville, Penn., operating a 2016 Freightline 18-wheeler, was traveling on Interstate 84 East in the area of exit 10 in Newtown at 1:03 am February 3.

Soldrich lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway, and crashed through the metal beam guardrail and proceeded down the embankment.

Soldrich reported a minor leg injury and was transported to Danbury Hospital by Newtown EMS. Soldrich’s vehicle was towed from the scene due to disabling damage.

The right lane of I84 East in the area of exit 10 was closed for an extended period of time. Soldrich was given citations for failure to maintain a lane and traveling too fast for conditions.

Tundra Hit Tree

Newtown Police report Maita Crespo, 32, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2015 Toyota Tundra Crewmax SR5/T, was traveling northbound on Old Green Road at 12:27 am February 5. Crespo crossed the center line and ran off the roadway to the left, striking a tree on the southbound shoulder.

Crespo’s vehicle was towed due to disabling damage. No injuries were reported.

Crespo was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Trailer Hit Car

Newtown Police report Douglas Porcelli, 56, of Woodbury, operating a 2020 Ford Ranger Supercrew, was backing out of a parking space in the parking lot at Big Y at 1:09 pm February 5. The trailer hitch of Porcelli’s vehicle made contact with the front passenger side door of a 2019 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited operated by Lindell Hertberg, 88, of Newtown, who was driving through the lot. The trailer became stuck in the rear passenger side door of Hertberg’s vehicle.

The hitch was able to be removed to unstick the vehicles; no visible damage was caused to Porcelli’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Unaware Car Struck

Newtown Police report John Mathews, 28, of Newtown, operating a 2008 Ford F250 Superbody, was traveling westbound on Wasserman Way behind a 2015 Hyundai Tucson operated by Gerard Fay, 64, of Milford, at 6:24 pm February 5.

Fay attempted to switch lanes from left to right. While doing so, Mathews accelerated to pass in the left lane. Mathews’ vehicle struck the rear left bumper of Fay’s vehicle. Mathews continued on Wasserman Way towards South Main Street. Fay contacted the Newtown Police Department, providing a license plate and description of the vehicle as a dark flatbed large pickup truck.

Newtown Police located Mathews at his residence, who said he was unaware that he had struck Fay’s vehicle while passing. Mathews was cooperative and provided information and insurance.

No injuries were reported.

No charges were mentioned in the report.

Erratic Driver

Newtown Police report that at 7:02 pm February 6, officers responded to the area of Tunnel Road for reports of an erratic driver. The vehicle was located on Barnabas Road, and following an investigation, police say Mark Brennan, 58, of Danbury, was placed under arrest and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Brennan was released on a $5,000 bond with a court date of February 23 in Danbury Superior Court.

Hit Flag Pole

Newtown Police report Ahriel Hernandez, 26, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2020 Nissan Sentra, attempted to turn left onto Main Street from Church Hill Road at 10:42 am February 7. The front left bumper of Hernandez’s vehicle struck the flag pole while turning.

No injuries were reported.

Hernandez was issued a verbal warning for making a restricted turn.

Ran Off Road

Newtown Police report that an unidentified vehicle exiting the parking lot of 164 Mt Pleasant Road struck a 2014 Subaru Impreza operated by Christopher Aber, 25, of Newtown, at 1:45 pm February 8.

Aber was traveling eastbound when the other vehicle pulled from the lot. Aber attempted to swerve, however, made contact with the vehicle’s right rear bumper with his vehicle’s left front bumper. Aber’s vehicle traveled off the side of Mt Pleasant Road, striking a state DOT warning sign.

The unidentified vehicle continued east on Mt Pleasant Road before turning right onto Taunton Lane, failing to stop.

No injuries were reported.

The unidentified vehicle was not located nor was a specific description of it provided by Aber.
