Grapplers Wrap Up Regular Season With Wins, Head Into Championships

Newtown High School’s wrestling team capped off the regular season this week and is set for the South-West Conference championships, at New Milford High, Saturday, February 12, beginning at 9:30 am.

The Nighthawks posted a 69-12 win over visiting Masuk of Monroe on February 2. The Hawks won seven matches via pinfall and one in a decision. Pinfall winners included Ben Plaue in the 126 pound weight division, Luca Manfredi at 132, Marc Maurath in the 138 division, Henry Terifay at 145, Fisher Stites at 160, Acea Shaham in the 195 weight class, and Jon DaSilva at 285. Jeffrey Gonzalez posted a 7-1 win at 170.

Newtown participated in the Bacon Academy Matt Bishel Bobcat Classic on February 5 and placed second among 15 teams, losing to Avon by 11 points. The Nighthawks had seven wrestlers in the finals and two champions: Manfredi and Plaue. Tommy Milligan, Kenna Gioffre, Maurath, and Stites all took second place.

In the last match of the regular slate, the Hawks hosted Joel Barlow of Redding, St Joseph of Trumbull, and Wilton on Senior Night, February 8. Seniors Gonzalez and Greg Gargano were honored. Newtown defeated St Joseph 78-0, Wilton 63-8, and Joel Barlow 69-9 to cap a 17-2 regular season.

“A very strong way to end our dual season and a super way to celebrate Senior Night for Greg and Jeff,” Coach Tom Maurath said.
