SMART Camp Wraps Up Summer 2015 Sessions
Parents and students swarmed the halls of Head O’ Meadow School, Friday, July 31. Bright yellow “SMART” bags hung from their arms, piled high with works of art created during the final session of this summer’s Newtown Continuing Education SMART Camp.
Summer, Music, and ART Camp runs for two, two-week sessions each summer, with hands-on activities that this summer included Jewelry Design, Great Clay, Mosaics, Fashion Design, Adventures in Painting, Fused Glass, Knitting, Icky Sticky Chemistry, and Theater & Performance Workshops.
After collecting their treasures, families gathered in the school cafetorium for a special fashion show, and a performance of Back To Summer, a theater performance created by the campers, from a script adapted to stage performance.
Twirling and stepping lively across the stage and down the steps, participants from the Fashion Design class showed off outfits they had designed and made — each one created out of newspaper.
Back To Summer was a tale of time travel, as youngsters mourning the end of summer found a way to work their ways back through the years, a little too successfully. Filled with song, dance, and plenty of clever puns tossed in to the script, the short play was a hit with the audience.
Then, with everyone headed out of the cafetorium and final hugs goodbye, it truly was the end of summer for these SMART campers.
Stephanie Schwartz, site supervisor for the SMART Camp, was sad to see the last group of campers head off, but pleased to have them leaving with plenty of good memories.
“It has gone spectacularly well,” she said.
