Newtown residents Jim and Sasha Allen may have left the NBC singing competition The Voice last week in the semifinals, but their impact on viewers did not end there.

Those who have been following the father-son duo’s time on The Voice since their Blind Audition that aired in September know that they made it through months of rigorous performances.

They sang roughly a dozen songs throughout the competition — some with competing artists and once with their coach Ariana Grande.

They captured the hearts of many viewers across the nation and filled their hometown with pride as Edmond Town Hall hosted two free viewing parties for local fans to enjoy their performances on the big theater screen.

During the semifinals, on December 6, Jim and Sasha performed “Mrs. Robinson” by Simon and Garfunkel.

Jim told The Newtown Bee, on December 8, that they selected the song because “many listeners wrote or posted requests in social media that we do a Simon and Garfunkel classic like ‘Sound of Silence’ or ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water.’ ‘Mrs. Robinson’ seemed like a good upbeat choice, and we noticed it had never been done before on The Voice.”

In addition to the Top 8 singing their solo song, each artist in the competition performed a 90’s duet with another contestant that night.

Jim and Sasha sang “Hold My Hand” by Hootie and the Blowfish with contestant Lana Scott.

“Lana Scott is an absolute joy to sing with and her incredible creativity and range brought enormous power to this 90’s hit,” Jim told The Newtown Bee. “Sasha and Lana had tremendous fun working the stage.”

Jim added that he and Sasha “felt very good about both performances.” He shared that “Hold My Hand” was easier to perform compared to their 90’s duet.

“The in-ear monitors, which are part of the live shows, made harmony vocals more challenging compared to the floor monitors used in taping the earlier auditions, battle rounds, and knockouts. This presented a constant learning curve,” he noted.

To the disappointment of many fans, the following night it was revealed that Jim and Sasha, as well as two other competitors, would be eliminated from the competition and not make it into the Top 5 for the finale.

Looking back on their journey on The Voice, Jim told The Newtown Bee, “We came so much further in this show than we ever expected, and we are so grateful to have shared the stage with these amazing singers and with our coach Ariana Grande. We feel our run on the show came to a conclusion exactly at the right moment.”

Finale Song

On Tuesday, December 14, Jim and Sasha were featured in a special pre-taped holiday song that aired during the final episode of The Voice.

Superstars Tori Kelly and Keke Palmer sang “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” with the Top 13 contestants of The Voice. It was in promotion for the upcoming animated film Sing 2 that they are both featured in, which is coming to theaters on December 22.

The stage was transformed into a cheerful winter wonderland that was complete with decorated Christmas trees around the stage and a large gold star hanging up in the background.

All the performers moved across the stage and had a chance to interact with one another. Jim and Sasha could be seen on the right side of the stage together before Sasha made his way up to the second step of the staircase.

At the end of the song, streams of red ribbon soared out from cannons and rained down on everyone.

Jim told The Newtown Bee that they were so glad that the Christmas song that was taped with the ensemble was included in the finale.

And The Winner Is...

The finale’s results night was packed with many star-studded performances that included Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Jennifer Lopez, Carrie Underwood, and Alicia Keys — just to name a few.

Coaches Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, and John Legend also performed with their team members who were still in the running to win the competition. The Top Five included Hailey Mia, Paris Winningham, Girl Named Tom (with siblings Bekah, 21, Joshua, 24, and Caleb, 26), Jershika Maple, and Wendy Moten.

Clarkson did a duet of the song “Happy” with Mia and performed “Leave Before You Love Me” with Girl Named Tom.

Also with two artists remaining on his team was Shelton, who sang “Love Train” with Winningham and “Just a Fool” with Moten.

While on piano, Legend sang “O’ Holy Night” with Maple.

At the very end of the night, host Carson Daly revealed America’s final voting results: Maple came in fifth place, Mia came in fourth place, and Winningham came in third place.

Then, after much suspense, Daly announced that Girl Named Tom had won The Voice. They are the first group in history to come out victorious in the competition.

With news of their win, the siblings appeared ecstatic and immediately hugged runner-up Moten who was standing beside them. Clarkson rushed the stage to congratulate her sibling trio and the other coaches and contestants did the same. There were hugs given all around while Bekah held the winning trophy and gold confetti rained on the stage in celebration of the end of season 21 of The Voice.
