Mark Kokinchak, an instructor for New York Botanical Garden and specialist of insect and weed control at Planters’ Choice Nursery, will be the next speaker for The Town & Country Garden Club.

The club will be at Newtown Senior Center, 8 Simpson Street, on Wednesday, November 10. A general meeting is scheduled for 6 pm, with the program to begin at 7. All are welcome, free of charge.

Kokinchak's presentation will demystify wood boring insects by explaining why they attack certain trees, how to prevent them from selecting trees, and what actions be taken if they do invade a landscape.

Boring insects are serious invaders. While many gardeners are familiar with the emerald ash borer that has killed thousands of ash trees in Connecticut, most do not recognize the other types of insects that can damage many other plants and residential properties in much the same way.

Replacing a tree that has been nurtured and cared for over the years is not just a financial loss but can often be an emotional one as well. As the idiom suggests, “forewarned is forearmed.” Kokinchak will provide information needed to keep our trees and shrubs resistant to these destructive insects.

Kokinchac attended the University of Connecticut, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Horticulture. He also obtained his CT Arborist License and Custom Grounds Ornamental and Turf License.

The Town & Country Garden Club designs, plants, and maintains the three traffic islands on Queen Street and Glover Avenues. Members are also active in many community endeavors that promote sound gardening practices.

Evening programs are free and open to the public. Reservations are not needed.

Additional information about the program and the club is available by contacting Denise Rod at denise-marierod@yahoo.com.
