When we vote on Tuesday, November 2, many of Newtown’s elected municipal board, commission, and council positions are up for grabs. Nothing’s more important to the direction, character, and affordability of our town than these local municipal positions so, I urge you learn about the candidates and vote, whether in-person or absentee.

Since our last municipal election in 2019, Newtown has welcomed many new residents so, I thought a brief primer might be appropriate.

Of the folks on 2021’s ballot, only First Selectman Dan Rosenthal and Town Clerk Debbie Aurelia Halstead serve in compensated town positions. Both are accomplished incumbents and have earned my vote.

All others run as unpaid volunteers. Newtown is blessed with a strong base of enthusiastic, talented, committed residents who contribute their time and expertise to the rest of us. These volunteers make our town what it is. Running for the first time takes a special courage and, as such each “first-timer” deserves your consideration.

One such “first-timer” is my wife Kersti Ferguson. She brings with her a decade of high-end real estate marketing success and the savvy of having worked with zoning authorities and historic commissions. Kersti is a great fit for the Planning & Zoning Commission and is running as an alternate.

Since 2011, Kersti, myself, our son, Jack — a second-grader at Head O’ Meadow — and Enzo, the puppy, have made their home in a lovingly restored, historic Taunton farmhouse.

Kersti has what it takes and has my strong support for this critical commission, especially at a time when politicians in Hartford are working to eliminate local zoning input; the concept of “local character” and; historic considerations. We need her.

Please join me voting for Kersti Ferguson.

Sincerely,

William DeRosa

Newtown
