Penalties, Late Interception Thwart Nighthawk Football Team
A pair of touchdowns were called back on penalties, and a late game missed opportunity to take the lead and interception prevented Newtown High School’s football team from pulling off a comeback against visiting Ridgefield on October 1.
The visiting Tigers escaped Blue & Gold Stadium with an ugly 10-7 win. Ridgefield broke a scoreless tie with a 35 yard field goal as time expired to end the first half. The Tigers scored early in the third quarter on a 47 yard play on third down and 15 yards to go.
Pass interference wiped out a Newtown touchdown and led to a punt later in the third.
Trailing 10-0 in the fourth, Newtown quarterback Dylan Magazu connected with Cam Ward for a 24 yard scoring play on third down. It was a 10-7 game with 10:29 left.
The Nighthawks forced a punt and appeared posed to go from being shut out to suddenly in the lead. A 21 yard Andrew Jacobs run set up an apparent Magazu TD pass that this time was called back on a holding penalty.
Newtown got the ball back late and Magazu aired out a long throw that could not be hauled in and Ridgefield intercepted a pass in the final minute to seal things.
The Hawks have a bye week, then visit Bunnell of Stratford on Friday, October 15 at 7 pm.
