Newtown Parks & Recreation has announced the Second Annual Scarecrow Contest.

Individuals, families, businesses, sports teams, and organizations are all invited to participate. Registered teams will “adopt” a Fairfield Hills lamppost of their choice in October, first-come, first-served, for a $25 adoption fee.

Applications are due by October 15. Visit newtown-ct.gov/parks-recreation and click on Second Annual Scarecrow Contest 2021 for full details and application.

Teams will have until Sunday, October 24, to build and affix their scarecrow to their adopted post. All scarecrows are to be on view by Monday, October 25.

The community is then invited to vote on their favorite scarecrow during the week of October 26-29.

The winner will be announced on October 30.

Winners have a chance to win a family pool/beach pass membership for Summer 2022 or assorted tier prizes donated by local businesses.

The public is invited to vote, up to once each day, for Most Original, Newtown Pride, and People’s Choice scarecrows. Ballots are available through the same website above, and will also be available at the front desk of Newtown Community Center, 8 Simpson Street, during the voting period.

For additional information contact Newtown Parks & Recreation at 203-270-4340.

More than 300 votes were collected for last year’s inaugural contest, which drew 25 entries.

Newtown Girl Scout Troop 50382 picked up first place in the category of Most Original; employees of Bee Publishing Company won Newtown Pride; and the entry from Church Hill Village was named People’s Choice.

Church Hill Village won People’s Choice honors in last year’s inaugural Parks & Recreation Scarecrow Contest. The competition is returning and applications are available for the 2021 Halloween season. —Bee file photo
