Newtown High School Announces Latest List Of Available Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships that are received in the mail. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships. If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov, 877-FTC-HELP, the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org, 800-876-7060 or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or call 703-276-0100.

National Federation of the Blind of Connecticut — This group will be awarding more than $122,000 in scholarships to at least 30 of the most highly qualified blind students in the nation. All applicants must be pursuing or planning to pursue a full-time postsecondary course of study in the fall of 2004. All scholarships are awarded for academic excellence, community service, and financial need. Applications and a list of requirements for each scholarship are available at the Career Center or by calling the committee at 641-236-3366. All applications must be received by March 31.

Evelyn Keedy Memorial Scholarship — One $30,000 scholarship will be awarded to a worthy high school senior who will enroll at one of 26 art institutes locations. All applicants must be a senior in a US high school and complete the entry preparation materials. Applications are available in the Career Center and must be received by May 1.

Newtown Soccer Club Scholarship — A $1,250 scholarship is being offered to one male and female senior soccer player who has played at least two years of JV or varsity soccer at Newtown High School. The applicants must be planning to attend a fifth-year prep school or a two- to four-year college, junior college, or community college. Applicants must have participated in the Newtown Indoor Tournament’s running section and given back to Newtown Soccer Club through training, coaching, or a similar capacity. A 500-word essay is also required. Applications are due by April 15.

The Robert J Glander Memorial Scholarship — Two scholarships, one male and one female, each in the amount of $1,000, will be awarded to a Newtown resident graduating from high school. Interested students may obtain more information from the Career Center or Newtown Babe Ruth Baseball. Deadline is April 2.

CHSCA Scholar Athlete $1,000 Scholarships — The Connecticut High School Coaches Association will award its annual $1,000 scholarships to high school scholar athletes. Graduating seniors must have earned at least one varsity letter, achieved a minimum 3.0 GPA, and demonstrated leadership skills. One male and one female will be nominated from Newtown High School. Only one winner from a school will be awarded a scholarship. Applications must be returned to the Career Center by January 23.

Lucent Technologies Global Science Program — The competition will identify and reward the academic excellence and achievements of 24 high school students in math, science, and technology. A $5,000 cash award will be presented to these graduating seniors along with the opportunity to participate with Bell Labs researchers in a Global Summit for one week in July and also be considered for an internship at Lucent Technologies if and when possible. Financial Planning Association Scholarship — Two $500 scholarship awards are available to college-bound high school seniors who are US citizens from Fairfield County and interested in pursuing a course of study that will result in a degree in business, accounting, or related business field and lead to a possible career in financial planning. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement, financial need, and career potential. Applications must be postmarked April 20 and received no later than April 23.

UNICO National Bridgeport Chapter — A high school senior of Italian heritage will be awarded $500 and a chance to compete in the UNICO National Scholarship Contest, which will offer five awards of $6,000. Financial need will be considered. All completed applications must be returned to the Career Center by February 4 for the nomination process.

Nutmeg Statewide PTA (NSPTA) — Two scholarships in the amounts of $1,500 and $500 to graduating seniors for PTA/PTSA high schools at the CT PTA Convention in May will be awarded. Applicants must be planning to attend a four-year college to pursue a career in service to children. Class rank, community/school service, and essay will be considered. Completed applications must be returned to the Career Center by February 4.

University of Connecticut 100 Years of Women Scholarship Award — To honor a high school senior planning to enroll in the University of Connecticut who, as a role model or advocate, has advanced the role and contributions of women in society. Preference will be given to female applicants in need of financial assistance, who demonstrate high academic performance and service to their community. Applications must be received by February 20.

National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation Scholarship — A $2,000 scholarship offered by the foundation to high school seniors who plan to continue their education in the restaurant and foodservice industry. Applicants must be seniors who are US citizens or permanent resident aliens who have a minimum GPA of 2.75 according to a 4.0 scale. They must also have a letter of acceptance at an accredited restaurant or food service related postsecondary program and a minimum of 250 hours of restaurant or foodservice; application at the Career Center. The deadline is April 16.

National Institute of Health Undergraduate Scholarship Program — The NIH awards scholarships to disadvantaged students who are planning to pursue a career in biomedical, behavioral, and social science research. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale or be in the top five percent of their class. The NIH Undergraduate Scholarship will pay up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition. Hord Foundation Scholarship — This scholarship is for black students (defined as having an ethnic origin of any black racial group of Africa) graduating from high school in the greater Danbury area. Criteria includes acceptance to undergraduate program or other program of continuing education, academic standing, financial need, and contributions to school and community, as well as a personal interview. Applications are available in the Career Center. Deadline is March 26.

Greater New York March of Dimes Nelson Rosenthal Convocation–10th Annual Essay Competition — A $400 cash award will go to the winners of the 10th annual March of Dimes Essay Competition. There are two levels of entries; first for high school juniors and seniors, the second for freshmen and sophomores. The question is to describe stem cell research and discuss the medical and ethical implications. Deadline is February 13.

National Peace Essay Contest — The contest is sponsored by the US Institute of Peace for students in grades 9 through 12. The essay topic is “Rebuilding Societies After Conflict.” First place state winners will receive scholarships of $1,000 and will compete for a national award of $2,500, $5,000, or $10,000. First place winners will also be invited to attend an all-expense paid program in Washington, D.C. More information is available at www.usip.org. Deadline is January 12.

NFIB Free Enterprise Scholars Award — At least 100 high school seniors nationwide will be awarded $1,000 scholarships to an accredited two- or four-year university, college, or vocational institute. Applicants must be nominated by an active member of the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) and generally rank in the top quarter of their graduating class. Elks National Foundation–Most Valuable Student Scholarship — More than two million in scholarships will be awarded to any high school senior who is a US citizen. Selection is based on academic merit, financial need, and demonstrated leadership skills. Deadline is January 6; applications should be returned to the Danbury Elks Lodge 120.

EF Global Citizen Award — Annual essay competition for college bound high school seniors. Nominees must submit a brief essay in response to essay topic. Selection for award is based largely on sincerity, maturity, clarity, and overall quality of thought. Ten national winners will travel together on a day-day expense-paid educational tour of Europe in July 2004. One student from each high school will be nominated to apply. Essay topic is available at the Career Center or at www.eftours.com. Deadline for nomination process is January 29.

Connecticut Youth Leadership Forum for Students with Disabilities — High school juniors and sophomores with a disability (as defined by the Americans with Disability Act) are invited to apply for a four-day innovative leadership forum with exciting and motivational activities that will strengthen leadership skills. Applicants must reside in Connecticut, have medical insurance and demonstrate school or community leadership. The forum will take place July 25–July 29 at the UConn Storrs Campus. Applications are available in the Career Center or can be downloaded at www.ctylf.org. Deadline is January 16.

Commitment to Agriculture Scholarship Program — Monsanto Corporation in collaboration with the National Association of Farm Broadcasters has renewed this annual program to award a total of $15,000 in scholarships in 2004. Onetime $1,500 awards will be made to 100 high school seniors who come from a farm family and plan to pursue a career in the field of agriculture. Applications are available in the Career Center and www.Monsanto.com. Deadline is February 15.

Mary Benevento/CAHPERD Scholarship — $1,000 scholarships for any graduating high school student who plans on attending a Connecticut collegiate institute and plans to pursue a degree in health care, recreation, physical education, or dance. Applications will be judged by scholarship, competence, and future potential in chosen career and general worthiness. Deadline is April 1.

Capitol Scholarship Program — Talented high school seniors with financial need attending a state postsecondary institution can win up to $2,000. Students attending an out-of-state school can receive $500 grants. Applicants must be in the top percent of their class at the end of their junior year or have at least a 1200 on their SAT. Students must be state residents and US citizens or permanent aliens. Deadline is February 15.

Elizabeth Gould Endowed Scholarship — For high school senior girls who could not attend college or vocational school without financial assistance. Up to three nominations can be made from Newtown High School. Preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated leadership and community service qualities as well as academic excellence. Amount depends on the needs of the individual. Applications and further information is available at the Career Center. Deadline is April 1.

Connecticut Building Congress Scholarship Fund, Inc — For graduating state high school students entering college-level programs in architecture, engineering, construction management, surveying, or related courses of study. Awards based on academic merit, extracurricular activities, and potential and financial need. Awards range from $250 to $2,000 and can be renewed each year. Deadline is March 1.

Pfizer Epilepsy Scholarship — A one-year $3,000 scholarship that honors 16 outstanding students who have overcome the challenges of epilepsy. Applicants must be under a doctor’s care for epilepsy. Additional information is available at www.epilepsy-scholarship.com. Deadline is March 1.

RMHC/African American Future Achievers Scholarship Program — The Ronald McDonald House charities offers scholarships for high school seniors with at least one parent of African American heritage and are eligible to attend a two- or four-year college with a full course of study. Students should contact their local chapter of RMHC for more information. Deadline is February 1.

Wells Fargo CollegeSTEPS Program Scholarship Sweepstakes — A national sweepstakes program (no purchase necessary) where 100 high school seniors will each in $100,000 in tuition prizes! Winners are chosen at random from those enrolled in the CollegeSTEPS program throughout the 2003–-04 academic year. American Legion National High School Oratorical Contest — For students under age 20 on the date of the national contest and who are presently enrolled in a high school or junior high school. Scholarship may be used for any college or university in the United States. Subject used for the oration must be on some phase of the US constitution emphasizing the attendant duties and obligations of a citizen to our government. The local Legion Post determines the deadline. More information is available in the Career Center or at www.legion.org.

Ayn Rand Essay Contest — Two essay contests are open to high school student writers totaling $62,000 in scholarship prizes. The $10,000 first prize on the Fountainhead is open to juniors and seniors; there is also a $2,000 first prize for freshmen and sophomores on the novelette Anthem. Entry deadlines are April 15 and March 18, respectively. Winners will be notified July 19. Essay topics and rules available in the Career Center or at www.aynrand.org/contest.

Governor’s Coalition for Youth with Disabilities — This scholarship recognizes the outstanding achievements of high school seniors with disabilities. Candidates must be a state resident with a disability (as defined by the Special Education Law or Section 501 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973). Applicants must demonstrate good character and responsibility attend a postsecondary school or training program and show promise for a successful career. Applications are available in the Career Center or at www.gcyd.org. Deadline is January 9.

Weller Foundation Vincent Voccia Vocational Award — For high school seniors attending Newtown, Joel Barlow, Masuk, Shelton, or Trumbull High Schools and planning a career in the skilled trades. Each school will be eligible for one recipient to receive a scholarship equal to the lesser of $2,500 or 50 percent of tuition or fees of the vocational-technical program proposed. Examples include aircraft or auto/truck maintenance, hairdressing, culinary arts, air conditioning, carpentry, and photography. Deadline is March 17.

Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship — Up to $6,000 is available each year for minority high school seniors who are US citizens planning to attend a four-year accredited college or university. Applications are available at www.jackierobinson.org or at the Career Center. Deadline is April 1.

Braindance Award for Student Research — One $1,000 prize awarded by the Institute of Living in Hartford to the best project in a competition open to all high school, undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students in Connecticut. Information is available in the Career Center. Deadline is January 30.

Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship — For high school juniors with a minimum 2.75 GPA who demonstrate special leadership talent, may have overcome obstacles and given back to their communities. Nine $2,500 scholarships will be awarded in each state and nine $25,000 nationwide. More information is available in the Career Center or at www.discovercard.com/tribute.htm. Application is due January 9.

Ted Martocchio Scholarship (Building And Trades Union) — For high school seniors accepted into the CSU system who is a state resident and child of a Building and Trades Union member. Financial need is considered. Deadline is April 30. Winner will be named May 30.

Pratt and Whitney Scholarship — This $1,000 scholarship is for a graduating senior who has been accepted to Eastern Connecticut State University. Minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrated interested or examples of excellence in science or technology required. Financial need considered. Deadline is April 30. Recipient will be named May 30.

T. Clark Hill Public Service Scholarship — A $500 award for a graduating senior who has been accepted to Southern Connecticut State University. Minimum 3.0 GPA, state residency, and leadership development and commitment to service in their high school or community required. Financial need considered. Deadline is April 30. Recipient will be named May 30.

IMPAC Award — Two young writers ages 13 to 18 from each of Connecticut’s eight counties will receive $1,000 awards for their prose or poetry. Applications are available in the Career Center. Application must be postmarked February 1.

Connecticut Innovations Technology Scholar Program — Provides scholarships and internships for Connecticut students pursuing higher education in certain science and technology fields at a state university or college. Scholars must maintain 3.0 GPA, be in the top 20 percent of their graduating class and work in Connecticut for two years following graduation. More details available at the Career Center or www.ctinnovations.com. Deadline is February 15.

Big Y Scholarship — Nearly 300 scholarships are being offered, totaling more than $200,000 for Big Y customers, employees, and their dependents. Big Y Scholarships recognize academic merit and achievement and are awarded to the most academically outstanding students in the Big Y market area. More information is available at www.bigy.com. Deadline is February 1.

National Alliance for Scholastic Achievement — For high school seniors nationwide who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and exhibit the ability to succeed in completing their higher education pursuits. NEACRAO Scholarship — Three New England Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers present three $1,000 scholarships to three high school graduates who will be enrolling in a NEACRAO member institution in September 2004. Weller Education Scholarship — The Weller Foundation is offering a $4,000 scholarship to recognize and financially assist a high school senior who plans to pursue a teaching career in public or private elementary or secondary school. Applicants must have a minimum 3.5 GPA, rank in the top 20 percent of their class at the end of their junior year and score at least an 1140 SAT. More information is available at the Career Center. Deadline is February 23.

Weller Instrumental Music Scholarship — The Weller Foundation is awarding $4,000 in awards to fulltime students at Newtown, Joel Barlow, Masuk, Shelton, or Trumbull High Schools accepted at an accredited four-year university or conservatory as a music major with an instrumental music concentration. Deadline is February 13.

Weller Medical/Health Sciences Scholarship — An award of $6,000 or 50 percent of the cost of tuition for the training program is being offered to high school seniors at Newtown, Joel Barlow, Masuk, Shelton, or Trumbull High Schools. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and score 975 or higher on their SAT. Deadline is February 23.

Holocaust Remembrance Project — A national essay contest for high school students designed to encourage and promote the study of the Holocaust. Students compete for scholarships between $1,000 and $5,000 as well as a possible trip to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. 2004 Guardian Life Insurance Company Girls Going Places Scholarship — Annual scholarship for girls ages 12 to 16 who demonstrate budding entrepreneurship, taking first steps toward financial independence and making a difference in their schools and communities. SPE Foundation Scholarship — The SPE Foundation, an affiliate of the Society of Plastics Engineers, is offering numerous scholarships for students who have demonstrated or express interest in the plastics industry. Financial need and strong academic standing considered. More information is available at the Career Center. Deadline is January 15.

James W Cooper Fellows of the Connecticut Bar Foundation Essay Contest — This contest gives high school students the chance to win a $3,000 or $1,500 savings bond to be used for scholarship purposes. The essay topic is, “Under What Circumstances, if any, Should A Minor Face Trial and Sentencing as an Adult?” Applications are available at the Career Center. Deadline is March 1.
