Raising Of Summer Flag A Patriotic Event
To the Editor:
A Norman Rockwell image, live, in real time, right here in Newtown, CT! On Saturday morning, early, at the flagpole, some Newtowners [and] a few canines showed up for the patriotic event of a lifetime — the raising of summer’s always beautiful American flag, an annual gift from Michael Sorrentino, Newtown Hardware’s owner. And Chris Gardner voluntarily manages the funding and maintenance of the 100-foot flagpole. Also, some thoughtful person’s suggestion for The Newtown Bee to publicize the event, closing with simply our pledging of allegiance. Wonderful.
The huge, impressive, handsome Hook & Ladder Co No 1 fire truck straddling the southbound center line, backing to the pole, its three-story long telescoping ladder extended, two volunteers on board to do the final lines’ tie-down. Through-traffic continued slowly, carefully. All vehicle lights activated, its warning lights blinking, celebrating the celebrity we were all there waiting for in gorgeous reality: all 20 x 40 feet of silk-like red, white, blue, and stars quilted in place, to be set free by “her/his” team of handlers. Awesome. Tears.
We caught our breath and recited the Pledge of Allegiance:
“I pledge allegiance to the flag
of the United States of America.
And to the Republic for which it stands,
one nation under God, indivisible, with
liberty and justice for all.”
Signed,
Elizabeth Lincoln
